| 815766 | 2009-10-01 00:47:00 | Hello all, I have a question that hopefully you will be able to answer. I'm essentially looking for an OS that will be able to boot up very fast (I was considering linux, but don't know where to go from here) and then load up one program on startup. The program is an .exe file. The next step (not absolutely necessary, but would be great if it can be done easily) would be to make it so that if the program were to crash, that it would re-load itself. I am looking at this because I want to create a renderfarm. I hope that it all made sense, and that you can help. Thanks! |

If we're talking under 10 seconds from hitting the power button to running the app, you can achieve that pretty easily* with Linux. With Windows, it's impossible. If you mean more like two minutes, then Windows is a valid option here. *Note that 'pretty easily' is relative, and depends on your skills in this area. The program is an .exe file. The next step (not absolutely necessary, but would be great if it can be done easily) would be to make it so that if the program were to crash, that it would re-load itself.Does the program have to be an exe file? What type of executable is this? Is it (only) a standard Windows PE binary, is it a .NET app, is it some kind of bytecode-compiled app with an interpreter, is it a text script attached to an interpreter etc. Do you have access to the source code, and is that source easily portable? Edit: What other dependancies does this app have? Does it need network access (I assume it does)? A database? Particular libraries? You really need to provide more info here. Yes, watching it for crashes is possible. Does this app have any kind of watchdog / heartbeat functionality built in? If not, do you have the access / skills to add it? I am looking at this because I want to create a renderfarm. How large a render farm? If it's anything more than a handful of machines, you *really* won't want to be messing with BartPE - it will get very annoying, very quickly. Generally the ideal system for this kind of application is Linux or some kind of UNIX, booting from a common network source. This means you don't need to install any OS locally on the machines, and it scales *very* well. I hope that it all made sense, and that you can help.It did, and we can, but more information would be very useful - you haven't really said enough about what you're trying to do. |
