2009-09-29 08:50:00 | I'm not sure if this a new one or not but i had a call (international by the sound of it)this afternoon from a guy posing as a security expert working for Microsoft who talked me through a little exercise with my computer management pane in xp to convince me i had virus's and then "transferred" me to his technician so they could start the process of "fixing" my problem. i stalled the tech guy at the start of the process by telling him my dsl was down because of the rain storms, reckons he is going to ring back 2moro night...... | kjw (15279) | |
2009-09-29 08:59:00 | Since when do MS call people to "help them" remove viruses. Had one similar last year, some place (not MS) calling, trying to drum up business, saying they are a computer business, with x Number of years in the computer service trade, and my personal computer is certain to have infections -- I started asking some technical questions -- Um Um Um Errr, then I told him who he was ringing - (What my Computer company does) -- "CLICK" -- Dial tone  Eited: Welcome to PF1 BTW :)

2009-09-29 09:10:00 | I know one person when the sales person rings they ask what they want and talk for a bit. Then they put down the phone and walk away while the salesperson is jabbering away on the phone. | convair (13650) | |

2009-09-29 20:48:00 | One one hand, I think it'd be fun to mess with them if I got this sort of call. On the other, I'd want to know how the heck they got my number. | inphinity (7274) | |
2009-09-29 20:55:00 | My aunt called Microsoft regarding an OS issue somehow, but she said they were unable to help. A few hours later she gets a call from 'Microsoft', telling her they were following up. My aunt, being a normal non-geek, thought it was all legit followed their instructions. This included letting the remote caller use remote desktop on her computer and doing all sorts of things (my aunt of course, despite watching, didn't know what was happening except that a nice person somewhere was controlling and fixing her computer). She called me and I went over and ran all the usual checks on it. There weren't any viruses or trojans, so I'm not sure exactly what they did.
