688190 2008-07-13 04:44:00 odds are the grey box on the mast is actually a booster. you will not get any pics until you plug a power supply in to the correct aerials lead. very common for previous people to take it with the tv....
I never thought of that, could be a mast-head amp, that would explain the multiple cables at the TV point. 1 for sky, 1 for UHF and 1 for VHF.

Can you take a zoomed photo of the aerials for us beetle?

688192 2008-07-13 05:15:00 Ok that looks like a combiner box. The screws / points on your aerials look very rusted.

Power for a mast-head amp would be supplied via the coax cable and a power 'injector' at the TV end, but as I say it looks to me like a combiner, not a mast-head amp.

You might just have to bite the bullet and go freeview. Remembering that the old system is going to be 'turned off' soon (not sure exactly when, I get told different things by different people). So you'll have to 'upgrade' eventually anyway.

I guess what I'm really saying is, it's probably not worth sinking money into your old, rusted, possibly pointing the wrong direction aerials.

Sorry :(

...but I would like for you to get up on the roof, maybe just for the view :p

688193 2008-07-13 05:41:00 ha . . . . . . . . . . . . .

well i went up in the ceiling . . . . . . . . . . . dust for miles, cables every where and tv aerial coming down in a couple of places, and into a 2 way spliter box it says on the packet . that goes straight down to where the lounge is and where thos others would come out . . . . . .

there is heaps of black cable going nowhere . . . . . . as i woulnd it up it just went round in circles . . . . . . .
left it up there tho .

so if the cable comes straight off the aerial straing to box, and then down to lounge, and plug for telly . . . . . . . . . and its still bad, its likely to need a booster or its the aerial?

and freeview doesnt inspire me, my dad has it, and it sux .

lol
so should i go and check the aerial anyway? not today, getting cold out there and i getting tired, need more coffee, and some lunch . . . . . . . .

688194 2008-07-13 06:03:00 You got a great selection of responses! I’m not sure which Freeview is being recommended, but Freeview still needs an aerial – either a satellite dish or a terrestrial aerial. Maybe a Freeview Satellite box will work with that dish, maybe not. How about borrow a Freeview Satellite box for a couple of hours – got any kindly neighbours? No point in a Freeview Terrestrial box until your rooftop aerial is fixed. And the ‘old’ system will last for at least 2 or 3 years yet. There’s no way the govt would try to force everyone to switch over by Christmas.
To further clarify F connector, which will definitely be on the old Sky cable: it has either a thin spike in the centre or a copper wire, but more significantly it has a hexagonal threaded ring to attach it firmly to a satellite receiver box.
Just another check – have you tried your TV on the rabbiits ears? Just to prove that your 32in TV wasn’t damaged in transit.

688195 2008-07-13 08:00:00 If the original signal is weak a booster won't make any difference, whats it going to boost. A booster is used when you are running 2 or 3 TVs of one aerial.

688196 2008-07-13 08:49:00 I would go for a new UHF aerial.

Looks to me as if:

It's pointing the wrong way and if it isn't it should be on the other side of the VHF one.

The Dipole is missing off the UHF aerial?

The Reflector is missing off the UHF aerial?

Time to call the aerial man me think. :)

688199 2008-07-13 09:55:00 sigh................. its not on the budget, it will have to stay that way. for a long time, i have fences to replace, that dogs can jump, a tv aerial just aint the priority.

and looking at the house's next on either side, the aerial faces the same way as them......... so.......

:(
