688074 2008-07-12 07:42:00 if Vodafone gave more data for cheaper then I expect that would happen.
the current way of things I expect to only do web surfing on wifi.

That is what I and the rest of the 40+ pages of iPhone hopefuls in the Herald were hoping for...until the prices got announced.

Had that happened I would have got one myself.
I was expecting something in the region of $30 a month for the cheapest package with 1GB limit on the data and associated 500 txts and 200 minutes talk going up to $80 a month for the top package with an "uncapped" 3GB of data with unlimited talk minutes and 1000 txts per month which is roughly what O2 in the UK are doing - although they have previous experience and competition. :D

However had that happened, not only would Vodafone have sold out in the space of an hour or so but their network would have been buried under the onslaught of new iPhone users which is probably why it didn't happen. Hopefully it may get to that stage in due course.

688075 2008-07-12 10:54:00 ... I realy love the txt/sms system, it makes the interface much more like a IM client, for each contact you can see who said what.

Palm Treo 600 and 650 (and later Palm OS Treos) have had this feature for many years.

And this is the main feature I would change to an iPhone (since Palm OS phones in NZ are no longer supplied and Palm as a company is going to Windows Mobile - yuk! Crap UI - and Palm is fading away anyway).

However, when I buy a new toy, I don't like buying a crippled version - top of the range, fully-featured for me - but with that, value for money. Although the iPhone purchase price-point is about right (at $350), the plan it is associated with stinks. The fact that the iPhone is capable of so much (especially as regards interweb surfing), but crippled by the pricing plan is the reason that I, like many others, will play a waiting game and see what Telecom comes up with (but I'm not holding my breath!).

688076 2008-07-12 11:12:00 Have you had a chance to use the iPhone in a public place yet and if so did you get any curious stares or glances? If you haven't yet you probably will soon :)

Mate, it's probably not because of the fact you are using an iphone that you get funny looks!

Hey kenj go back and read the first post...have a think about it...then comment. OK. (it basically says intelligent comments only so by definition that counts you out.)
For the record I'm not the one with the new iPhone, robsonde is.

Well not "funny" looks as such, more like people admiring the design of it which they don't tend to do for any other mobile phones on the market.

Not at all.

At the rate Apple’s Vice President of Design keeps winning awards for the iPhone, he’s going to need a bigger mantle! Last time it was the unprecedented (and continued!) domination of the uber-elite Black Pencil, now it’s the Mobile Data Association 2008 MDA Personal Achievement Award.

Said the judges of Ive’s iPhone design:

“It sets the bar very high for all present and future competitors and as such, is shaking the mobile phone industry. We look forward to seeing Ive’s design innovation continuing to challenge the mobile world.”

They’re right. For the last long while, when it comes to consumer electronic design, there’s been Apple’s Ive and pretty much nobody else.

I take it you haven't seen any one the One News Breakfast clips where they are discussing the iPhone?

Even PC Mag.com has reviewed it well here

The iPhone 3G is the beginning of a new computing platform. With 3G and the App Store, the best iPod ever is now one of the best handheld computers ever. We struggled with a bunch of day-one bugs, but we're confident that Apple will work them out. Oh, and it's finally a decent phone, too.

Why on earth were you expecting something like that? You know there's no way in hell a telco is going to offer prices like that in the near future.
