688180 2008-07-12 11:53:00 The UHF aerial (the one closer in the photo) looks like it's missing the reflector at the back (like a folded wire grid). Again it doesn't look as if it points in the right direction. PaulD (232)
688181 2008-07-12 21:58:00 They are not reflectors, but are there to stop signals coming in from the back, like signals bouncing off buildings and trees etc. Not all UHF aerials have them.

688182 2008-07-12 22:14:00 I've got a similar problem at my new flat - I've got a UHF & VHF aerial on the roof & I got the landlord to fix up the coax leads in the lounge (they were a real mess - one was missing the end & the other one was almost broken off). I still don't get any reception from either aerial lead - I get a faint picture from one channel that isn't even good enough for the auto tune to pick up.

The landlord will get round to fixing it sometime & its not a high priority, but I'm curious to know what is wrong - apparently it worked for the previous tenants.

688183 2008-07-12 22:48:00 Would it just be a case of just Tuning the TV into the aerial on this house? PJ Poppa John (284)
688184 2008-07-12 23:04:00 Ok so at the moment the tv is plugged into the insert hole on the face plate .

i have on numerous occasions tried to tune bioth by the tv auto and manual . . . . . . . . and never get the picture any better . and sometimes even lose the channels we do have .

i now have a huge bookshelf placed in front of those phone leads, the black ones go round the side of it, but i cannot alter the one in the wall to tv existing unless i just pull it out .
one black lead only has a wire sticking out of it . and the other has a tv connection, silver with single point in middle of it . im presuming this is the sky lead? now my understanding of that is it wont work unless i have a sky decoder and am getting sky correct? it will not recieve signal for me?

I have to go and finish my fence first and the tv wires is next on priority list so i will check it later . and see what i find, and i will be all the more clearer than mind probably . cos i have no idea what im looking for or what i actually need . and i hate heights . . . . . . . .

lol

688185 2008-07-13 00:39:00 Greven and Beetle you may need something like this. I have two seperate cables coming from my UHF/VHF aerials into my lounge then plug them into the splitter and then splitter into the back of my TV or VCR etc.
Another thing to look for is corrosion on the aerial connections. It might pay to get up on the roof and losen the connections and spray something like CRC on them.

688186 2008-07-13 01:42:00 odds are the grey box on the mast is actually a booster. you will not get any pics until you plug a power supply in to the correct aerials lead. very common for previous people to take it with the tv.

its missing the reflectors but not a big deal. loose a bit of signal but often not enough to worry things.
most aerial designs available use reflectors. while they reject rear signal they also play a part in incoming signal.
quite common for that brand to have the reflectors fall off either due to bolt rusting out or tech leaving the bolts loose.

688188 2008-07-13 04:39:00 LOL @ the range of advise in this thread.

OK here goes...

Firstly, you have (as others have stated) a Sky dish, UHF and VHF aerials.

Secondly, you have a bracket with nothing on it. That's just weird, but hey it's Wanganui right!?

Now I have no idea where the UHF and VHF repeaters are in Wanganui, or your proximity to them, so for someone to say 'it looks like the UHF aerial is pointing in the wrong direction' is mis-guided, unless they know something I don't.

I'd say that one of the leads that is drilled through the plate is from the Sky dish, and so at the moment is useless to you. It will most likely have an 'f - connector' on it and wont fit into your TV.

Something like this:

www.dse.co.nz

But with the copper core of the cable protruding past the end of the screw part.

Your best bet is to connect to the other two fittings one at a time and do an auto search and see what you pick up. It sounds like you have done this already and have only gained a 'fuzzy' picture.

The next thing to try is unscrewing the plate and take a photo of what you find. I can advise whether or not the connection is 'good'.

You could also (if your game) climb on the roof and check the connections in the green combiner box. Also you may be able to see neighbors aerials from your new vantage point, check if your aerials are pointing the same direction as everyone else.

If none of that works, well you may just have to pay someone to check it out for you, or purchase a freeview box (this might be cheaper than paying someone to 'fix' your current setup).

Be aware though, it may not be a simple 'plug in and watch' experience. Sky use 2 different 'types' of LNB's (the bit that looks back at the dish) and may need some settings changed in your freeview box before you pick up any channels.

One other problem I have run into when hooking up freeview to a long un-used sky dish is that the LNB might not work! I found one where the seals had degraded and it was full of water.

Hope that helps.

688189 2008-07-13 04:41:00 Tweak'e will be correct - it is probally a masthead amplifier.
Needs power.
