687596 2008-07-18 07:48:00 Apple don't need to "cook the books" to show great sales they just need to ramp up iPhone production to keep up with demand. :) vitalstatistix (9182)
687597 2008-07-18 07:53:00 Whatever, just like Sony with the PS 1, 2, 3 deliberately hype then restrict sales creates interest among the gullible. gary67 (56)
687598 2008-07-18 07:58:00 Apple doesn't restrict sales, instead they have to estimate what the sales will be for a newly released product and then attempt to plan enough production capacity from the manufacturers to keep up with demand which includes factoring the lead in times to the manufacturing schedule that they use for their "just in time" delivery method.
While something like that might be easy to do when you have solid sales data from previous quarters to go on it is a different story for the products that Apple puts out. Apple likes to keep about a 1-2 month inventory of stock on hand of its hottest devices - although considering how fast the products can sell out of stores, that 2 month inventory can often drop faster than production levels can be ramped up in time to compensate.

Also a lot of their gadgets have a fairly limited time frame compared to gadgets from other PC makers to when they get EOLd to make way for the next revision.

687599 2008-07-18 08:27:00 Jesus Christ WMG, Your devotion blinds you. I really want to mock you,. But its moved beyond sad and is getting past pathetic.

Launching in every market with limited numbers is just a way to maximise the hype, "selling out" is all part of the process. Makes them look like even more of a hot commodity.

The alternative is one market at a time, with plenty for that market......

Actually they did that already with the first model of the iPhone where they just launched in the US then they moved into the UK then to Europe as the contracts were signed with the various telcos. Now they are just upping the distribution model which is quite an interesting comparisson when you compare it to the design, distribution and up take of the Microsoft Zoon - or should that be total lack of uptake in 2 years. :p

Consider that this fiscal year its Windows Vista operating system has been panned as a disaster, its sequel to the Zune music player has barely sold at all and its attempts to buy Yahoo (YHOO) have gone nowhere.

687601 2008-07-18 10:35:00 vitalstatistix, your comments do make you seem like an Apple/Mac defender.

This to me is a bloody good example. You're either young or brainwashed.

Admit it, Apple fudged it up... Why voluntarily support a group that could build more, but wanted to only build enough to supply their estimates, which they misjudged.

Edit: vitalstatistix editing his last post to lambast Microsoft instad of supporting makes me think. Why would I want a Mac? Because if I dont, I might have a Mac defender that wears a pink shirt chasing me.

Not that young - about the same age as plod.
My comments are based on what I know about how Apple operates from having watched and covered their progress through a number of web sites that follow every product that Apple has put out since early 2000 or so when they were a 16 billion dollar company with a stock price of about $14 a share. In that time I have learned enough about Apple to make my own informed judgements about how well the company is going to do.

From what I have read Apple has done better job keeping their channels supplied with iPhones than they did when the iPod was first released bearing in mind the increased scale of the market and difference in numbers needed for production for the two product ranges.

687603 2008-07-19 09:06:00 but who really needs - or wants - to know all this?

yourself being the exception of course

687605 2008-07-19 09:53:00 but who really needs - or wants - to know all this?

yourself being the exception of course I think the whole point Bevy is making is quite simple - yes vitalstatistix loves apple - and all apple products, if that's the way you feel then good for you, hope you are happy with the products you chose to invest your money in .

I know if I ever had a problem with a MAC /Apple product I know who could more than likely answer the question .

BUT there is no need to ram Apple/MAC's down every ones throat, its like a broken record - over and over again .

Have you looked at most of the apple advertising on TV- mostly it rubbishes Microsoft, its main competition - and that's exactly how a lot of the posts are written, and to be honest I have never seen MS do the opposite .

We all know MS products are not perfect, but neither is any other manufacture .

I have nothing against Apple / MAC in the past, but with all the Apple is better than MS crap, I'm like many others, I'm very quickly getting turned off with the product, all this apple is the best is doing more damage than good .

You don't see car or any other product manufactures advertising rubbishing the opposition, they advertise their own brands .

Is rubbishing MS the best Apple can do ?
