687576 2008-07-17 03:21:00 Jailbreaking allows you to install custom apps, amongst other things.

If you go to:
www.fring.com

The line says:
1. In order to install fring, you need to have your iPhone “opened” first to accept 3rd party applications. Refer to the Internet for details.

Thats just a polite way of saying "Jailbreak your iPhone or you cant install it" ;)

Fair enough there Chill although I think you are making the right decision. I have a feeling that the current 800 or so apps on the iPhone Apps store are going grow fairly quickly as more and more companies race to put their stuff on there. Hopefully most of those will be available down here too. :p

Interesting article about the affect the iPhone is having on RIMM

' It took more than an hour for someone to utter the word "iPhone" at Research In Motion Ltd. [RIM-T]'s annual general meeting Tuesday night.

For more than an hour, RIM co-chief executives Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis managed to avoid mentioning Apple Inc.'s rival smart phone, which launched in Canada last week.

Instead, they told shareholders about the dynamite financials the company posted in fiscal 2008, they chatted about the increasing global popularity of the BlackBerry family of devices and showed off the company's new advertising campaign.

But once the floor opened for questions, the first thing shareholders who saw the media reports about iPhone line ups around the world last week wanted to know was what the launch of the rival next generation iPhone means for RIM.

Don't worry about the article - give it another week and it will probably be closer to 2 million sold. Its not like Apple has to force people to buy the iPhone - from what I read yesterday, if you aren't in the Apple Store in Chicago the moment the shippment arrives you pretty much miss out on getting one untill the next shipment arrives either later that day or the following morning.

Indeed they do. They are working on the theory that Apple classes as "shipped and paid for" buy the Telco as "sold" in the accounting books at Apple which techincally speaking is correct, although actually "in circulation" aka "purchased by the end customer" is still the next step and would be a lower number and yes, Microsoft has a similar practice with moving with boxed copies of Vista. The main difference being that people actualy want iPhones :D

All Apple has to do is to have sold 10 million or more iPhones by the end of 2008 and it will have beaten the analysts predictions and Steve's claims, the question then becomes; by how many units did they beat the number - only just and the share price will drop, absolutely killed it - and the share price will go up ;) how ever if the guideance for the next quarter is too conservative, as it normally is, the share price will shed about $10 -+. Such is the life of AAPL stocks.

I wasn't expecting you to pop in and visit, I was just explaining the figures in the article. Nothing wrong with visiting an Apple store, even if it is just to look and then leave - they are some of the most successful retail outlets on the planet.

687582 2008-07-17 07:24:00 I reckon you should go all out, and really lay that Apple fanboy act on thick, I'm sure we haven't yet seen the full extent of your powers. Metla (12)
