Sadly those who seem the most sour are those who've not actually tried it, or cant afford the plans. Yeah it costs more, but its not *that* much when you look at it compared with other smartphones. Is an iMate JasJam out of your price range, with a monthly data allowance? Then an iPhone possibly is too... I dont really mind too much, its a business expense here :)

Either way, yes, it is "just a phone", but it also has a lot of other cool things that a regular phone doesnt have. Browsing PF1 actually *looks* good on this phone, unlike all my other smartphones.

Dont like them? Thats fine, you dont hafta read this thread & take a knock at them. Personally Im actually really pleased with it, and Ive spent a few minutes, shown it to a few other people around the place and they too are now honestly interested in getting one after having used it for more than just 30 seconds, or reading reviews...

And that is peoples attitude towards most apple products, yes they cost more but once you use them you can see why.

687557 2008-07-16 04:46:00 Still would be nicer if it was "open", and I could run apps that other people have written but arent in the Apple Store :( Chilling_Silence (9)

Correction - they aren't in the Apps store "yet" ;) there are still a lot more coming. I gather there are 2in excess of 800 at the moment and that number is growing as Apple puts more up there.

Everyone from Oracle to game developers are working on apps for the store right now.

Why is the platform not "open" - 2 reasons, Apple are developing a new platform and Apple want quality apps built on quality easy to use code, hense the reason for the iPhone SDK package.

Just because the apps store doesn't use opensource code doesn't mean you can't download the SDK and write your own apps - and earn some cash along the way.

The keyboards nice, Ive really got quite used to it now! Autocorrecting my occasional mis-hit of a button is brilliant!
GPS works well, got a lil lost yesterday and it gave me accurate directions to my destination.

I was in the Vodafone store on Queen St earlier and had a play with the demo iPhone, took all of 3 seconds to work out how to use it and about 1 minute to work out where the home button was (the black button at the base of the iPhone). Its about the easiest mobile phone you will ever use....sooo why didn't I buy it? $$$$ - too much for the data plan as far as I am concerned.

Not at all. Only one person asked me if I needed any help when I was playing with the iPhone. I went across the road to the bigger Vodafone store afterwards ( the one on the news) and there were a couple of guys in there - 2 Asians and a Kiwi guy in a suit who were looking that the iPhone and checking out the features, the guy in the suit seemed very engrosed in it, and none of the staff were bothering them.

As I mentioned berfore (and got laughed at) Apple products are designed to sell themselves with out the need for a "sales person". If a person really wants one, as a few PF1 members have done this week, they will simply walk into a store and buy the device.
They may play with a demo version for a few minutes but, ultimately, no actual "sales pitch" is needed which is why they are currently sold out in 21 US States after only being on sale for less than 1 week.

According to Chris Keall

A sales rep at Vodafone's 171 Queen Street store - scene of the world-first 3G iPhone sale - said his shop had sold out.

This took me back a bit, as I'd been expecting to uncover anecdotal evidence that the over-priced 1GB plan (the second most expensive in the 21 countries the 3G iPhone was released) had left local punters cold.

But at 171 Queen Street, the rep claimed that all of its allocated 170 3G iPhones had been sold - which sounds pretty good, to me, for one store over three days - and that "it's sold out everywhere". A bunch of guys on their lunch break were hunched enthusiastically around a remaining display iPhone, proving negative press about the 3G model's pricing hasn't dented the device's rock star appeal.

The DS Wireless store up the hill also reported a sellout, though the guy behind the counter said "we hardly got any". Reinforcement iPhones were arriving in two weeks, he'd been told.

Personally I would agree with you but some people I have talked to lately see the price plans as pretty reasonable based on what else is available on the market.
