816120 2009-10-02 07:48:00 I am building a new computer for a friend, he has a budget of $1000 and i was wondering what parts you would suggest i get. He already has the mouse keyboard and monitor from his old pc that died so those things dont need to be included into the budget. Thanks for the help

P.s This pc will be used to play high end games :D

816121 2009-10-02 08:01:00 Well I wouldnt bother with i5 or i7 then. Just getting the mobo and CPU would be over 1K. So, it may have to be 775 pin dual core or quad core Speedy Gonzales (78)

What are his monitor specs?

Here's what I've come up with:

E5200(overclocked to 3ghz with stock cooler)=$140~ (www.pricespy.co.nz)
P5Q-Pro=$235~ (www.pricespy.co.nz)
GSkill 2x2gb DDR2-800 RAM=$120 (www.playtech.co.nz)
XFX 4870=$230 (www.playtech.co.nz)
CM 550w=$130 (www.playtech.co.nz)
Antec three hundred=$140 (www.playtech.co.nz)
500gb WD HD=$90 (www.playtech.co.nz)
Liteon DVD Drive=$50~ (www.pricespy.co.nz)

Comes to around $1100~

The prices I have used are for the cheapest price of a quality retailer from pricespy.

If you shop around and shop at less "safe" places then you'll be able to shave another hundred or so off, but don't go crying to me when they ignore your RMA requests...:p

This setup above is obviously Intel based-I will soon post an AMD alternative.

Also-I have selected a motherboard that is considered mid range, and offers excellent features, built quality and upgradeability overall.

Edit: Alternative routes include:

1. Use the E6300 CPU instead-its around the same price but has less overclocking ability
2. Get a 4870 1gb rather than 512mb-the extra memory will only be useful if the monitor is 22"+ and at a high res
3. Get a cheaper motherboard, such as the P5Q-SE. Only real noticeable difference is only 1 PCI-E x16 slot, so you will not be able to pair another card in the future for more power.
4. If you decide to do 3. then you probably won't need the 550w PSU, and a 450w would be sufficient and save you another $50

Oh, and BTW Speedy, i5 750w+cheapest Gigabyte/Asus P55 motherboard is only around $550~

Cheers

816123 2009-10-02 08:20:00 AMD Alternative:

AMD Phenom II X2 545=$155~ (www.pricespy.co.nz)
Asustek M4N78 SE=$130~ (www.playtech.co.nz)
Other than those two components(mobo+cpu) everything else stays the same.

Will shave about $100 off the cost.

816124 2009-10-02 09:43:00 I notice there is no mention of an operating system in the posts or prices anyware.

For the i5 CPU - The cheapest P55 board would prob be the Asus P7P55D LE -- I know I got the wrong one by mistake the other day, was meant to get the Asus P7P55D. -- oops!

Never mind it will come in handy. :D

Edited: or the Gigabyte P55-UD3

More than enough, you could run two 5850's with a 650W psu. A single 5850 only requires 500W
