815793 2009-10-01 01:17:00 Friends PC apparently boots up ok but then sits there for up to half an hour once you click anything at all to load it. Including bringing up Task Manager - which once it appears just shows System Idle at 99% even if some other app has been clicked.

It's a fresh install, all motherboard drivers downloaded and installed from manufacturers website.

Fully working MB, RAM and CPU.

Also apparently the 2 mouse buttons sometimes decide that they are both left buttons.

She hasn't yet checked Event Viewer....but hmmmm......mouse related?

815796 2009-10-01 01:56:00 DMA/PIO transfer mode not right?

Ah yes, there's a thought. I also suggested checking the drive as well. But then there's mouse weirdness as well?

815797 2009-10-01 02:53:00 While its taking a snooze to load - is there any Hard Drive activity, or is the light out, Occasional flash. wainuitech (129)
815798 2009-10-01 09:19:00 Gotta love the weird ones...

On the topic of mouse buttons getting confused, I've noticed that Windows 9x manages that by itself sometimes

Check device manager for constantly refreshing itself? faulty hardware/drivers can cause that..

Wouldn't put faulty RAM etc past it though. Even if it comes up perfect on memtest, does not mean it's 100% working.

That brings me to the other idea, corrupted files. I had a backup copy of freespace 2 (one of my favourite games) and don't worry - I own a real copy - which had been corrupted somehow during copy no doubt. When loading from the 2nd CD, the game would sit there for 10 minutes before starting. With the original CD it would load instantly as it was supposed to.

I eventually discovered using VP tools (anyone who has played around with FS2 will know what I'm talking about) and found one of the resource files was corrupted. How it still managed to load the game I do not know. It was not an unreadable CD, copying the file off the CD to the HDD manually took the normal time and the file was still corrupt.

815799 2009-10-01 19:23:00 The trouble with seeing Task Mgr with nothing going on is that it only loads *after* the big sleep. What you really need is to see TM during the sleep! Catch22.

Never seen a PIO mode do this - it just makes the machine slow.

Does it function normally (apart from mouse prob i.e.) after it responds? Event Viewer might be interesting.

Good luck!
