689447 2008-07-16 07:26:00 Dear all (especially Myth! :D), it would be great if someone can give me some guidances on how to pronounce these words:

"Tihei" and "Oral" of the phrase "Tihei Maori Oral"

Am I right to pronounce them as "Tai-he" and "L'Oreal without the first L"?

Also, how would I say this - "Takoto"? I suspect it is just "Ta-koutou"?

Cheers :)

Ta(r) Co(re) T Oar

But I think you mean Ta(r) Coa(t) Toe

Say the words above, but miss out the bracketed letters.

Pronounced Tea-hay mow-ree or-ra

Takoto .. ta-kaw-taw

How about "koe", as in "tena koe"?

689452 2008-07-16 08:14:00 An additional question, when performing the Mihi, how should I place my hands and what's the "correct" tone? I guess it is appropriate to look at the audience?

Cheers :)

689455 2008-07-16 10:19:00 Thanks for the vowels, lakewoodlady, but sometimes I am not sure how to pronounce certain words even though I could guess them. :) Renmoo (66)
689456 2008-07-16 10:43:00 Tena koe ... Teh-na kweh

Hands should not be in pockets, or behind back.
If you are doing a mihi or whaikorero, arms/hands can be used to express what you are saying (i.e. if you are doing a mihi to the people, do a slight arcing motion with your arm, with palm open and face up to show you are encompassing all the people you are speaking to, if you are doing a mihi to a landmark, again use your arm to gesture to the landmark). Do not point

A lot of the elders/ more experienced kai-whaikorero (speakers) will hold a stick, which essentially does the same thing (as an extension of your arm). But for now, best just use your arms/hands :D
