689154 2008-07-15 10:33:00 Hello,

After printer advice I purchased a new printer.

Now I am back for more :help: . Lol..

I am looking for a video camera to be used at Speedway (Stockcars ect) so it will have to be able to work in the glim and have reasonable audio recording. Will prefer hard disk and I will be able to charge and free up memory as laptop will be on hand.

Any price range up to $1000 RRP or up to $500 via IM brand new or 2nds..

Thanks!

I've yet to find any video camera that has any more than unsatisfactory audio recording, especially in the wind.

The mics on video cameras are nothing amazing, simply satisfactory . In most cases they will suffice . But if you require good recording, make certain that you buy a camera that will allow you to plug in an external mic .

One main advantage with an external mic is that you can fit it with a wind sock and if you purchase a lapel mic (for your subject) the sound is far superior, mainly because the sound echoes all around before it reaches the camera mic . The lapel mic has no echo, much more intimacy and therefore much better results .

If you are using the camera in the wind, tape some foam over the mic . It does not cut down the wind noise completely, but certainly sounds much better . If you can, find some shelter .

Don't pay extra money for a camera with many effects . While these effects may be great they are not necessary as you are usually able to create most effects on your PC . Besides, if you create an effect in the camera and you don't like it, or stuff it up, you can't undo it . The important thing when recording an event is the event itself . If it is only a oncer (such as a wedding) you don't get a second chance, so forget the effects in the camera and do them later . Concentrate on obtaining the best picture you can .

If you are recording a wedding, use an external mic . The sound is every bit important as the picture, particularly at a wedding . You must have a mic as close to the subject as you can . An extension mic is usually fairly unobtrusive but you and your camera are usually unwelcome close up .

Optical zoom lens are great, but a digital zoom is next to useless . Most camera seem to have this feature but don't let the salesman tell you how great the digital zoom is . It's rubbish!

Try the zoom out in the shop . Take it out into the street . Use the digital zoom to see how bad it is . Then check out the optical zoom .

I have been using Sony gear for many years and little else . I have no complaints .

I have been recording and editing video for many years . I'd be happy to help you with your new purchase if you would like .

689159 2008-07-22 10:17:00 Some cams with built in mics are ok .

On mine (till I figured out what it did) there was an option in the menu called Zmic or something . I forgot to turn this on so it wouldnt pick up background noise . If its off and you record outside while its windy, it picks this up

But after I turned it on it was fine
