817240 2009-10-06 01:19:00 Wonder why this is such a secret 16 days from the release? Are they embarrassed, perhaps? linw (53)
817241 2009-10-06 01:24:00 Ooops, I see the online shops now list win 7. I have been looking for guidance from microsoft.co.nz.

Mmmm, $279 for Home Premium OEM.

817242 2009-10-06 01:31:00 Not quite right on the pricing - have a look at Ascents pricing (www.ascent.co.nz), generally they charge a reasonable price. (but can be beaten) ;)

Most of the suppliers have it listed as well. (but not all)

817243 2009-10-06 01:36:00 Beat me to it, WT! I was just coming back with $217 at Ascent! That sounds MUCH better than $279. Wonder how come Computer Lounge are so much higher?

OK, any advance on $217?

Hey, Playtech $199!!

Had a look at the link. Which one would you use to go up from XP Home? Thanks. PJ

817245 2009-10-06 02:04:00 I have been trying the Beta version of Windows 7.
For normal computer work it is no better than Vista. Vista looks and feels better.
Unless you have a modern computer you will have a problem finding drivers for W7.

W7 is probably better for gaming than Vista.

The best Upgrade from XP Home would be XP Pro Sp3. You would use the same drivers. Should be able to pick a copy off Trade Me for a few dollars.

You can install a Vista theme, or a W7 theme which will improve the feel of it.

Most people will choose Home Premium. You do need to make sure your hardware specs are OK, of course.

817247 2009-10-06 02:12:00 Hi PJ,

Look into something like this:

mzee,

Whats the point of going from XP Home to Pro, unless you need the likes of the advanced file-sharing, Remote Desktop, or the very few other features? Seems like a bit of a waste IMO...
I've used the Beta, RC & RTM versions of Win7, and I can safely say with 100% certainty that the RTM *way* outperforms Vista in every single way.
Drivers aren't a huge problem, some things like dated graphics cards don't run in accelerated mode (Such as the ATI Radeon 9250 which where dirt cheap a while back).

Provided you've got 1GB+ of RAM, pretty much every PC people these days use will happily handle Win7. Sure there's going to be exceptions, but by and large if your PC is less than 6-7 years old, there's a good chance it'll run just fine.

Couple of things with your assessment...XP is no longer getting updates from MS (only critical) .Win 7 IS better than Vista in gaming and everything else period and BETA is hardly the best way to judge a final product....
