817138 2009-10-05 07:42:00 My notebook has 4 USB2.0 sockets. Quite often when activating an external device connected via one or other of them I get a message that I will get better performance using a USB2.0 connection...click below to see them.
I don't know if this is an incorrect message because when I click nothing shows.
Is there anyway to check the connections I'm using? And why am I getting this message?

817139 2009-10-05 07:51:00 Assuming you are using Win XP go to device manager and check USB. If you have an Enhanced USB controller it would be safe to say it would be USB2 Sweep (90)
817140 2009-10-05 08:47:00 Are you using a hub between the device and the PC? jwil1 (65)
817141 2009-10-05 21:45:00 Tried reinstalling the USB Controller drivers. Right Click>Uninstall>scan for hardware changes or reboot.

817142 2009-10-06 05:19:00 I have 4 USB sockets on my notebook

One to my adsl modem
One to a USB hub (with 7 sockets)
One to an external HDD - this is the one that most frequently throws up the message about a faster connection.
One currently to a film scanner
so thats a total of 10 available but Device Manager doesn't show anything like this configuration.
It only has 2, neither of which is named as being USB2.0 but if I click on them both the first shows 11 USBs (none of which are named as USB2.0) and the second shows 2 (both of which are named as being USB2.0).

I'm totally confused.

817143 2009-10-06 05:22:00 The hub will probably appear as a hub in device manager. Whats the hdd plugged into a port or the hub?? Hubs dont always work with every USB device. I take it the notebook is always connected to power? Speedy Gonzales (78)
817144 2009-10-06 07:23:00 If the hub is not a powered one then it may be that the devices are not getting enough power. Blam (54)
817145 2009-10-06 07:37:00 In case Speedy missed my last post the HDD is plugged directly into the notebook's USB and the notebook is always plugged into the mains.

For Blam6 the hub is a powered one.
