817019 2009-10-05 04:29:00 Hello,

I have a 160 GB Sata which is filling up fast at the moment, and i want to get a new 500 GB Sata, but also i want it to be seen by wndows as 1 hard drive (i.e. 660GB), and so installing it is easier.

How can I do this, and do I have to use something called RAID (what is it?)?

Installing is simple - change the path to D: when you run the installer.

817022 2009-10-05 04:45:00 It can be done but I think you need a server operating system to "extend" the free space across more than one hard drive so it looks like one drive in 'My Computer'.

Spanned volume A collection of portions of hard disks combined into a single addressable unit. A spanned volume is formatted like a single drive and can have a drive letter assigned to it, but it will span multiple physical drives. A spanned volume—occasionally referred to as an extended volume—provides no fault tolerance and increases your exposure to failure, but does permit you to make more efficient use of the available hard disk space.

If it were me adding a new 500GB HDD I would ghost/image the existing HDD to the new one and remove the 160GB or perhaps use it for backups only.
The 500GB will be faster than the old one so making it the main/system drive should speed up bootup/loading times etc.

Are you thinking of RAID?

AFAIK RAID doesn't work with 2 different sized drives.

You'll have to do what CyaBro suggested(JBOD)

817026 2009-10-05 08:00:00 If you want RAID you need 2 or more physical hard drives of the same size and also it is dependant on what RAID you decide you need or want.

For more you can have a look at this article.

Windows XP supports dynamic disks. (support.microsoft.com) So that would mean it can be done? In saying that I've never liked dynamic disks in fact converted a few servers setup with dynamic disks back to basic (backup to external drive, then back again) so I wouldn't recommend it.

817028 2009-10-05 09:46:00 No as it says its limited to XP Pro and 2000. If you dont use either of these, you'll probably lock yourself out of the hdd. I wouldnt convert a hdd to dynamic Speedy Gonzales (78)
