817250 2009-10-06 03:21:00 Had a look at the link. Which one would you use to go up from XP Home? Thanks. PJ

As the others have mentioned:

If you wanted to upgrade to Windows 7.

For general usage,Home Premium.

If you wanted to upgrade further, you would select professional - the main reason for Professional is it will run the FREE XP mode, for any programs you find wont work correctly in Home Premium.

As for Drivers- the only problem I have had so far, and thats on all of the W7 PC's I have here, is I couldn't locate the Windows 7 Drivers for my new laser printer - Lexmark X500n (www.lexmark.com) - just used the Vista ones and it worked perfectly.

817251 2009-10-06 03:42:00 I have Win 7 RC on a spare new machine and everything works out of the box I haven't even installed the mobo drivers, (will when I get my full copy). The Vista 64 bit drivers work with my ageing Pixma printer and Win 7 even talks to my print server gary67 (56)
817252 2009-10-06 04:23:00 I've used the Beta, RC & RTM versions of Win7, and I can safely say with 100% certainty that the RTM *way* outperforms Vista in every single way.
Drivers aren't a huge problem, some things like dated graphics cards don't run in accelerated mode (Such as the ATI Radeon 9250 which where dirt cheap a while back).

Provided you've got 1GB+ of RAM, pretty much every PC people these days use will happily handle Win7. Sure there's going to be exceptions, but by and large if your PC is less than 6-7 years old, there's a good chance it'll run just fine.

As a computer techy at a school, we have had access to Windows 7 RTM for a couple of months, and I have been using it there on a laptop with a low-ish end Core 2 Duo and 1GB of RAM shared with graphics, and I can report that it works at least as fast, probably faster, than it did with XP. I was really surprised. MUCH better than Vista. I also did not have to install a single driver, all were included in Windows. Microsoft has worked really hard to include as many drivers as possible, in fact it will be the users of newer hardware if anything who will have to download lots of drivers from the internet after installing.

Those worried about drivers, most Windows Vista drivers will work with Windows 7 just fine, and all the big manufacturers already have at least beta drivers for Windows 7 anyway.

817253 2009-10-06 05:42:00 You'd be surprised, many drivers that aren't included are part of Windows Update, both old & new hardware! Chilling_Silence (9)
817254 2009-10-06 05:49:00 I was surprised with the Vista drivers on the old (socket 754) mobo. There are no vista 32 bit drivers for it at all. But the drivers (in device manager / windowsupdate option), seem to work OK. The LAN/ACPI, and audio drivers. The only drivers I installed were the ATI drivers, for the vidcard Speedy Gonzales (78)
817255 2009-10-06 06:17:00 Beat me to it, WT! I was just coming back with $217 at Ascent! That sounds MUCH better than $279. Wonder how come Computer Lounge are so much higher?

OK, any advance on $217?

Hey, Playtech $199!!

Don't forget Playtech want postage so for me their price was hardly any different to Ascents

I agree-installed in on machines from 2005-2009, and had no driver problems.

Only thing is though, with some integrated video card drivers only XDMM is supported, and not WDMM, which is required for Aero to work:(

817257 2009-10-06 07:38:00 Update on Computer Lounge price. It is now the same as Playtech - $199!

Nothing like keeping the competition hot.

Yep, no driver problems, here, either.
