A question has arrisen after being up in the ceiling while checking out the tv cables ( another thread entirely) and what i saw looks like dusty fluff, im presuming it is insulfluff........... as its loose.... like in a breeze it would blow away, it is think in some areas, and missing in others. and my bed room has pinkbats in the ceiling area.

so the question is, this dusty stuff does it work? and does it have a life expectancy....... cos to me it looks horid, and just like it needs to be swept away and put in the bin, and replaced. i dont know when it was done. but it is a browninsh dirty colour.

it didnt seem particularly warm up in the ceiling and i find this house quite cold.... but not like my last two rentals. is insulfluff really warm or is something else better? pink bats or woolen bats?

i do know the walls in this house arnt insulated..... cos theres holes in different places and no insulation showing.

688797 2008-07-14 09:31:00 Don't know if this is a good comparison or not ---- In our first hose we brought, it had that insulfluff, and it sounds like the same colour as you describe - that house was never overally warm or held much heat.

This house we currently own ( or the bank does mostly :D ), its around the same age, has pink batts in the ceiling, it is usually warm most of the time.

What is very interesting is last week we got a HRV home ventilation system put in to stop the condensation, the control panel on the wall shows both the roof temp and the room temp, currently at 8.40pm, the roof temp is showing as 10, the room temp is showing as 17, so the heats staying in.

Even in the early hours of the morning like last night at 2.30am, the roof was down to 4, yet the rooms were at 12, so somethings holding in the heat, I would say the batts work better.

688798 2008-07-14 09:55:00 My ceiling has that stuff too. Not sure what it is exactly, but we thought it's just 30 years of dust! qazwsxokmijn (102)
688799 2008-07-14 09:59:00 No comparison - modern batts have probably 10 times the insulation rating of that stuff. One of the best investments you can make in your house IMHO. nofam (9009)

That and an HRV ventilation system.

688801 2008-07-14 10:39:00 ok, another question,

pink bats come in different levels of warmth yes? what is the best warmth level is needed to be used? and the thicker it is the smaller the area it can cover yes?

and what happens to the insulfluff that is already there? and you no longer need? if its not warm enuf that is.... what do you have to do with it? im presuming its not something you can recycle? what is insulfluff made of?

688802 2008-07-14 10:40:00 Just throw the new bats over top of whatever insulation is in there...

As far as I know the fluff is shredded paper, laced with a fire retardant.

688803 2008-07-14 10:50:00 "browninsh dirty colour" is that Insulfluff or Rockwool? PaulD (232)
688804 2008-07-14 10:59:00 it just looks like something you sweep up on a really dusty concrete floor.....

where they put the pink bats, they must have scooped out the old stuff, because there is a definite high line like a wave of the stuff, it just sort of puffs, dientegrates when you try to pick it up, to me it looks like years and years of dust piles........ lol

its not something you roll out and cut. like pink bats or wool bats. it looks like a strong wind would blow it all away.
so is it insulfluff? ive not ever seen a photo of the stuff before so dont know.

688805 2008-07-14 11:21:00 Sounds exactly like insulfluff, the stuff we had in our old house was a pain if you had to go into the roof for what ever reason and you disturbed it, they pump it in I think, and it kind of spreads around, weighs next to nothing.

Over a period of time it settles due to movement of the house, earthquakes etc - if it gets wet - what a mess.
