2008-07-21 00:54:00 | Yet again I have to help out the Suckers who use Xtra. This mornings rang me as after spending ages with Xtra he was told "we have traced the problem to your Zone Alarm firewall." Yes he runs Zone Alarm, its the new fixed one actually. The lazy ******** on the helpdesk did not even bother checking the guys email settings which were not wrong - just non-existent. I rang Xtra and told them I'll bill them for my time in future.

2008-07-21 01:10:00 | I had the same kind of issue with the TelstraClear Help Desk with my mother's machine last week. Shortly after the ZA problem became public (I have Automatic Updates set to ON for my mother - since she would leave everything until I visited otherwise), she lost connectivity, rang the Help Desk and spoke to someone whose first language was not English. He then proceded to advise her to blow away all the Gmail account settings that I had input and start again with just her Paradise account. Of course this didn't fix it (especially since Mum had typed "pop3.paradise..net.nz") and I then had to go visit her to explain that it wasn't the Gmail settings that caused the problem, install the later version of ZA and set up the Gmail account again (and fixed the pop3 Paradise issue at the same time). Help Desks are misnamed...

2008-07-21 01:12:00 | Had a similar thing happen a while ago myself. Was helping a family friend with problems with sending emails. Problem was that outlook just wouldn't send emails as there was no send button. They'd spent ages on the phone to xtra/telecom trying to sort it out but had gotten nowhere. First thing I did was check there email account settings - which was a wee problem as there was no email account setup! Helped them set up an account, and whaddya know, sending emails were allowed :) Made me SERIOUSLY question the competence of Xtra/Telecom's help desk staff though.

2008-07-21 01:40:00 | Not to create an arguement pctek but not all people have an alternative as to ISP depending on where they live. It also depends on the user requirements and, of course, the distance from the exchange along with numerous other variables. For me Xtra works fine. The only time I need to ring the helpdesk is when a person forgets their password and get Xtra to reset this as I do not keep records of passwords for customers. But then I may be a Sucker and then maybe not but you have lumped ALL Xtra users together. And more to the point. If the Xtra helpdesk person had solved the problem then you would have not been employed on this particular issue. I take it that you are invoicing the user for your time and it was also a user fault? As usual I do not know the full facts because I was not privy to communications which may have passed between the parties involved.

2008-07-21 02:15:00 | I think the whole point of Pctek's post is exactly what a lot of us in the business already Know - most of the time the Help desks are not staffed by people who know what to do, I have often had to instruct these people on help desks to check this that or the other. I've lost count the number of times a customer was meant to have had broadband put on, and when its not going, you ask the help person to check that its actually working and they go - oh, no its not even activated , then a few minutes later all's well.

To deliberately misquote: "A lemon by any other name.... is still a lemon". I could be ruder, but this is a family show.... :D ("A rose by any other name wouldst smell as sweet") |
