2009-10-07 08:49:00 | :DAs an error prone Developer I often end up on the wrong end of the stick. today after using Gparted and creating a 7.6gb partiton to test Win7 on my vista machine I restarted only to find bootmgr has uh, "gone missing". I used windows boot disk to "repair" my computer but it did nothing. after searching the web all I ended up with was, "use the windows boot disk to fix it" windows boot disk does nothing. Help Appreciated!! I will keep working on a solution in the meantime Regards you local error magnet:cool:

2009-10-07 10:28:00 | So did you boot from the Vista DVD and select "Start up repair"? You may have to run it several times, as it only does one function each time you run it. If that fails, we can try running the commands manually in cmd. Also-try running a chkdsk C: /r in command prompt. Blam

2009-10-07 21:06:00 | yep, tried booting from vista disk and ran startup repair several times (now reports no errors can be found try removing any newly installed hardware) also ran bootrec/fixmbr, /rebuildbcd ect but to no use. tried installing vista in the 2nd partition and couldnt boot (no bootmgr) then tried to install win7 on partiton and got diskread error, ctr+alt-del restart. ran bootrec (from vista and win7) and got no error on boot but just an accented a with an arrow (*á→) abd no promp to restart or fix anything. will try running chkdisk now | The Error Guy (14052) | |
2009-10-07 21:52:00 | CHKDSK didn't fix anything. sill the *a arrow thing. tried to rebuild the BCD manually but the BCD seems to be still in existance. | The Error Guy (14052) | |

It could also be because Win7 min requirement for the HDD is 16gb. 7.6gb is not enough, make it bigger with gparted. Then, follow this tutorial (neosmart.net) to try and fixt he bootloader problem. |

2009-10-08 00:27:00 | booted of a ubuntu live disk to copy all my stuff from the vista partition to my external so ill give that a go soon. I'm going to remove the WIN 7 partition and test on virtual PC. Im not sure if rebuilding the BCD will do anything as windows isnt reporting a bootmgr error anymore just that weird *a arrorw thing. Thanks for the help so far

2009-10-08 01:47:00 | followed that tutorial, everything went without a hitch. only one problem. It didnt fix the problem. rebooted and ran gparted again to delete the 7.6gb partiton. while in the gparted main menu I tried one of the options "boot from local HD and got the disk read error. however if Itry and boot from the HD without running Gparted I get the random *á→ and nothing else. any thing to think about there?? | The Error Guy (14052) | |

2009-10-08 10:12:00 | I've seen this problem before, and the way I've fixed it is to install 7 on another seperate partition, and keep it there and se the bootloader from that. Seems like even when you fix pretty much everything it still doesn't work... BTW You may want to copy files from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository, they contain all your drivers.(To save you from downloading them again) Blam
