817451 2009-10-06 10:16:00 I want to buy a 1TB hard drive, and want to know if anyone has had any good (or bad) experiences with any in particular.

Any of them proven to be more reliable than the others?

Please post any thoughts

817452 2009-10-06 10:31:00 So far so good for my WD, although I did have to unlock it to see the full 1TB, but seems fast and quiet hueybot3000 (3646)
817453 2009-10-06 10:46:00 I've read excellent reviews on the WD Green ones, very, very quiet.

Have the Seagate one myself, can't complain:)

In terms of reliability, stick with WD or Seagate and you should be fine anyways.

817454 2009-10-06 11:28:00 In terms of reliability I really meant for the hard drives themselves, not the actual brand

Seagate failed with their firmware problems but they were quick to fix that, and it has nothing to do with mechanical or electrical reliability. Firmware can easily be rewritten and upgraded, I do not hold anything against Seagate because of that

But not so if a certain model of HDD has a spindle motor that is known to go bad (not that I know of any drives which might do this, it's just an example)

817455 2009-10-06 12:01:00 I've had 2-3 Seagate 1TB one's and no problems at all (firmware or otherwise) beeswax34 (63)
817456 2009-10-06 19:48:00 I've had an external 3.5" Maxtor Jade Basics 1.5TB and it was *horrible*, constant problems, no support, in the end I sent it back to manufacturer and it took 3 weeks for them to say "Oh yeah sorry about that, you're right, it *is* broken". Many other people online have had issues with their 500GB & 1TB drives. I'd avoid them like the plague now.

Stick with internal if you can, with that much data, it's nice not to be limited by USB2.0's 480mbps. It'd be cheaper to buy a PCI SATA Card half the time compared with an external caddy ;)

Western Digital is great! I've purchased a stackload of Scorpio Blue drives lately and love them to bits :)

817457 2009-10-06 20:02:00 I would not recommend Samsung F1 drives. I have 2 and I thought that they were pretty good and fast for a while.

Then one died suddenly without warning. The second has my system partition on it, and I keep getting bad sector warnings on it. I fix them but a new one appears after about a week or so.

I don't trust them any more so I have decided to replace them with WD Black WD1001FALS drives. They also come with a 5 year warranty.
