690688 2008-07-21 22:42:00 At the bottom end ~3GB ~$40 are there any ISPs that can afford to go much lower?
Sorry, it's no contest.

It has been said that Xtra/Telecom :yuck: are so adept at bottom end service, no other ISP can compete. On the score of malice to the user, they are streets "better", and for ignorance and arrogance they are peerless.

690689 2008-07-21 23:05:00 Xtra's plans are far overpriced. Their service below par, compared with other ISPs in NZ. I'd agree with pctek.

As long as there is a phone line, you can sign up with any of the major ISPs in NZ. And Xtra's plans are still far overpriced.

The ISP employ such dim wits. They don't train them. I have never had any problems like that with other ISPs, apart from Vodafone.

Xnet, Orcon, KOL, Telstra Clear, all have great help desks.

Yes, very difficult. I know exactly how it works, and I take my hat off to the people who do it - well. Not Xtra's helpdesk. They are basically half trained monkeys. Seriously, they are not IT people. They read off bits of paper, if something isn't quite right, they have absolutely no idea what to do. There is no skill involved, almost anyone could do what they do.

...Do you notice there are very rarely any complaints on here about anyone's helpdesk service, apart from Telecom and Vodafone?

It is different strokes for different folks.

There have been complaints about most ISPs and usually the download or upload speed rather than the helpdesk I admit. I found Orcon helpdesk to be difficult when trying to change from Orcon back to Xtra.

There are budget considerations for quite a few people here and presumably some people have more needs than others or maybe wants.

Do you ever notice that quite a few questions come in saying, I want a FREE data recovery, image editing, PDF editor or name any other application for example?

If all people were exactly the same then life would be less complicated but not as much fun. I chose my ISP because this is what suits ME. I have no problem with other people making their own choices as is their right.

I fully realise that what suits me may or may not suit others depending on the circumstances.

Did I not see a few complaints about Xnet download/upload speeds?

690690 2008-07-21 23:07:00 Yes plenty, although it's been fixed now. And Orcon has and is still having occasional international traffic issues, but we weren't talking about that, we were talking about helpdesks. At least Xnet and Orcon's helpdesks are honest with you when there is a problem! I personally haven't heard of any issues with changing from Orcon, I expect you'd find that would be an individual on the helpdesk team, rather than the whole staff.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We just established that at least one ISP, Xnet, and others aswell, have cheaper plans than Xtra.

Isn't what you said there contradicting your earlier post?

PS - I am on Xtra at the moment at home (Not paying for it). I find it to be way, way slower than the neighbours Xnet connection. Line speed is the same. Pings around NZ are double what they are on Xnet, and international speeds, especially YouTube are always really bad, even at 3 or 4 in the morning. IMO, the occasional slowness issues Xnet or other ISPs have, are the same thing that Xtra suffers constantly.

690691 2008-07-21 23:22:00 Uhm, most ISPs?

Take Xnet for example. $36.95 for that.

That's a significant saving, over the course of a few years.

OK so your definition of far overpriced is $3 for plans that aren't quite the same.

That's exactly the same plan - 3GB of data.

Their other plans are worse.

Using Xnet as a comparison here.

Xtra 6GB plan - $49.95

Xnet 6GB - $39.95

Xtra 10GB plan - $59.95

Xnet 10GB - $43.95

Xtra 30GB plan speeds not capped - $99.95

Xnet 30GB speeds not capped - $79.95

Xtra 50GB plan speeds not capped - $149.95

Xnet 50 GB speeds not capped - $99.95

Give or take a few cents here or there. See what I mean?

690693 2008-07-21 23:47:00 I'm not arguing about the plans above 3GB. Once you launch into that territory it's time to join the vast shoal of internet users shifting from ISP to ISP.

So far Xnet performance in my area doesn't make a $3 saving worth it.

690694 2008-07-22 00:08:00 That's fair enough, I was talking about their pricing as a whole, not just that plan.

Well I wasn't. I was talking about the crap helpdesk support. How has this got into a I like XTra thread/ Other ISP has better plans, anyway?
