691672 2008-07-24 07:34:00 Unusually for this time of the year, we have an ant problem. Those big black fat ants are making their way inside and up on the bench.
The neighbour thinks its because the rain we have been having (and it only happens when it rains) are driving them inside.
The benches are generally clean, and theres usally only a few on the bench at any one time.

What can I use to beat this problem? I have a four year old daughter, and would prefer to bait on the bench (out of her reach) around where we baited for mice (behind the toaster for example)

Advice please :)

691673 2008-07-24 08:22:00 The 30-day sprays are pretty good at discouraging crawling insects... Spray low down near where you think they're coming in. johcar (6283)
691674 2008-07-24 08:49:00 The old fashioned FAT treatment usually works.
Economical and satisfying but a bit time consuming.

(Place ant on ball of thumb, crush with finger.) Finger And Thumb cure. Not recommended for Lions or scorpions.

691676 2008-07-24 09:30:00 Hi Myth

When it comes to ants, get used to the idea there is no way you can beat 'em. You can however control and manage them.

The first step is to do the common sense approach. Do not leave scraps of food around. For example, sugar spilled on benches etc. Remove rubbish from near the outside walls of the house too.

Now discourage them from coming into the house. There are heaps of magic potions out there if you want to waste your money but the best of the lot is white vinegar. Simply fill a spray bottle. Spray inside around the door openings, window frames etc. This incidentally, will also stop moulds growing on the frames too. Empty food cupboards out and spray the selves. Allow to dry. Replace food in cupboards and put a few bay leaves on each self too.
Spray the white vinegar anywhere else the Ants can enter the house.

Outside, put a few citrus peels around, lemon, orange etc. Liberal amounts of cayenne pepper can be used in sheltered areas too.

Overnight, Magic!! No more Ants!!

None of the above methods will kill the Ants. They do not like these items and will simply move out and go to your neighbors place where they will be more welcome!!

Anyway, give it a go, doesn't cost much, is completely safe and you probably have all the ingredients already. Let us know how yah get on.

(Place ant on ball of thumb, crush with finger.) Finger And Thumb cure. Not recommended for Lions or scorpions. That has been the general method thus far. However, thumb and owner are in disputes, thumb wants leave, owner says leave has been cancelled due to workload. Thumb threatening strike action

691678 2008-07-24 11:42:00 By some antsand from the super market. The ants don't really like it. You can stand and watch them disappear. I use it all the time.

691679 2008-07-24 19:51:00 We have had Bugs Or Us come in once a year for the past 5-6 years. They offer a warranty on their work and come back if the ants return again within a few months. Some years I have had him back a couple of times.

Over that time he has turned a real major problem into just a quick annual spray and has them fairly well under control.

At about $60 a year I find it well worth while. It would be major cost if they got into the walls of the house.

691680 2008-07-24 20:36:00 Wander around outside carefully looking for the nest, when found empty a whole can of flyspray. I found it useful to have a spade at the ready and dig the nest over to make sure you get them all. I think I read that if you get the queen ant (or is that bees) then the nest will dissolve.

Other than that I found using those ant bait stations quite good as well if you cant find the nest but you can see the trail. Just position station on the trail and the poison does the rest.

We use Jae Carpet Cleaners once a year. He does the carpet in the main room then bug sprays the kitchen. Before using Jae, I tried cans of spray and lots of ant bait but they never worked that well. As Bantu says, " At about $60 a year I find it well worth while. " And for that we get a clean carpet as well.
