| 690928 | 2008-07-21 15:49:00 | I bet that the current home server which uses PCs to store, archive and recall data for MP3, DVD and iPod things will likely be replaced with stand-alone and built in systems from the manufacturers outside of the PC business . Mostly, the fact that loss of data if a hdd fails will drive people to seek these stand alone systems that seem to be impervious to data loss . Running only 1-TB is also gonna limit people in this storage arena too . Maybe 2 to 5-TB will even be too small . I find that I am rapidly approaching total filling of 8-500G hdds and will soon need to get even larger and larger . My fear is of hdd failures . . and they are when, not if . Maybe a provider can save these files for me . . . is this where Google is going maybe? |

| 690929 | 2008-07-21 19:25:00 | Hard Drives are cheap and always getting bigger. IMHO Still the cheapest form of storage. I backup a lot of digital video and tend to do so on my older smaller hard drives. Eg backup 3-6 months work onto an old 250 or 320Gb SATA drive, unplug it and store it in the cupboard and replace it with a new bigger one. I can get a 1Tb drive cheaper now than I got my very first 80 Megabyte drive all those years ago. Blu-Ray backup might help when they get the bigger disks available, but not cheap. I did read where Hard Drives sitting too long unused might not start up when finally used, so how long is too long? It is and has always been a bit of a dilemma. |
