818125 2009-10-08 09:38:00 I had a call from my mother in-law, she described a problem... which after a bit of research appears to an infinite loop in Vista Software Update.

The problem seemed to appear back with SP1 last year and clearly hasn't been resolved.
I've seen a bit of documentation. Some suggesting booting to safe mode and using restore points. Some suggest deleting an offending xml file.
Either way, it is gonna be fun providing telephone support on this...

Anyone like suggest the best way forward?

818127 2009-10-08 10:16:00 Is it one specific update?

Or all?

Sorry, I had seen the problem described as an infinite loop on a number of sites. But yeah some more info would be helpful.

Basically the screen is stuck on an installation screen installing 3 of 3 ... 0%
There is no progress in the installation, after a few minutes the computer restarts and it just continues to loop through the install screen and restarts.

Shutting down the machine takes you back to the same install screen with no other options.

I'm supporting the user in another city. So just want to be clear in my own mind how to approach this without confusing the lady at the other end of the phone too much.

We'll see what happens on the next software update.
