818084 2009-10-08 06:47:00 Okay - been playing with freenas, and run into a slight problem -

According to the Release notes its version 0.69.2. The interface (www.imagef1.net.nz) The manual is about as much help as t1ts on a bull :p

I Cant seem to create a folder in it ?? How in the blue blazes do you create folders ??

So far its installed, Can be seen on the LAN, and can access a blank drive, I can Access all its functions. Its formatted as UFS.

I've looked at many places, google, freenas, but cant actually find anywhere that actually tells you how, right clicking doesn't give an option to create a folder.

818085 2009-10-08 06:56:00 A guess (since I don't have FreeNAS) is that you'd have to create the folder at the command line - unfortunately a lot of open source projects have useless documentation, and assume that all of their users are Linux gurus. somebody (208)
818086 2009-10-08 07:02:00 You haven't configured the disk yet.
When I set mine up I used this tutorial
blogs.techrepublic.com.com
+ the manual
took a while but after a few hiccups I got there.
How to forge has this as well

I don't mean any disrespect,

This is what I was meaning - lots of people say that simialr thing " they fiddled around and got it working". Thats not explaing how it was done.

Somebodys comment summed it up perfectly.

818089 2009-10-08 07:26:00 Ok a bit more helpful, but thats an older version, the one I got the interface is quite a bit different, but similar in other places, usually has more functions.

Looking at it you have to enter Via FTP - what a load of mucking about - thats not gonna happen. The web gui does work. ,ut I cant see anywhere to create a folder(s) within the system. I do have user accounts/Groups setup.

818090 2009-10-08 07:35:00 If you have your Disk configured the next step is to create a mount point for it.
Disks/mount point/management then hit the plus sign enter your desired details and save.
Then Disks/mount point/Tools select the mount point you created and tell it to mount it.
After that lot you need to configure Cifs/smb and you should be there(I hope) and I dont use FTP
only Cifs/SMB

It looks like you have just booted FreeNAS, but have not inserted a floppy/attached a USB disk for FreeNAS to store its configuration files. Try inserting/attaching one.

818092 2009-10-09 01:00:00 Well time to bin FreeNAS - what a heap of crap - I followed the link in post 3 & 7 by the letter, and right back where I started, It wont allow to make folders. ( even in ftp) you can see it on the LAN, and It opens main folder I created called shared, but thats all, you cant transfer to it, cant create sub folders. Added users, with full permissions - its bloody hopeless.

Think I'll stick to Ubuntu as a free file server, at least that works.

I have seen many NAS devices, and they are running some sort of linux, but not freenas- and they all work perfectly.

Thanks for any suggestions any way.

818093 2009-10-09 01:39:00 Do you need to configure SAMBA to work in FreeNAS? I assume you were trying to access the share from a Windows PC? nofam (9009)
