693680 2008-07-31 00:45:00 I am in the market for a new TV as my old and trusted Sony 29” CRT is just not cutting the mustard anymore . So like any good girl I do some research and I have narrowed my search towards Sony or Samsung LCD’s or Panasonic Plasma’s . Of course I want the latest in high definition 1080p .

So I get into the car to visit some reputable retailers at a mall Noel Leeming, Dick Smith Powerhouse and Bond & Bond to have a look at the TV’s . Not a single store was able to show me what HD looks like! They all run crappy videos over a Media Centre and all the TV’s just seem bigger but not better . When I was asking if I could see something in High Definition no one seemed to be able to help me . One guy even had the audacity to tell me that I should just imagine and it will be stunning . Yeah sure I am paying $3k for something I don’t even know what it looks like .

This weekend I will visit smaller stores (Stereo World and Magness Benrow are apparently quite good) to finally see what the entire HD fad is all about .

Sorry for the rant .

693681 2008-07-31 00:48:00 Powerstore where I live are very good with HD. They had some cracker setups last time I was in there. :drool wratterus (105)
693682 2008-07-31 00:54:00 It is stunning!!!

My LCD is 12 months old and only has 1080i not 1080p - a minor thing as HD TV is so good you would have to have eyesight like a hawk to notice any difference . It is also a case of "crap film in = crap picture out" When you get good 1280p it is really good .

So people are telling me but I still haven't seen it yet. Any good store in Auckland who stocks Sony, Samsung & Panasonic and can show me DVD's and sport TV in High Definition?

Can't help you. They are all pretty useless here in Hawkes Bay as well

693685 2008-07-31 01:16:00 havn't they got dvd's in HD yet ?

the other thing to remember is 95% of people will not be able to tell the difference betwen HD and not. i would just look at them side by side and pick one you like reguardless of HD etc

693686 2008-07-31 01:33:00 from what some people say, 32" is too small to make full use of 1080 resolution.
Also only the new Sonys have integrated digital tuners, the rest of the tvs require a separate freeview tuner.

I went to a noel leeming once and they had a blu ray menu showing on a 52" display. It looked quite sharp, but ive never seen anything in motion yet though.

Most people would be able to tell the difference between 480p and 720p on even a small screen, and certainly on a screen 40-inches or greater. However, you are somewhat right in regards to 1080p. Unless you screen is bigger than 40-inches or you sit really, really close, you probably won't be able to see the difference. Still, regardless of your situation I would suggest getting 1080p if you can afford it. Even if you won't be viewing 1080p material right away, you will be at some point.

Edit: Sony Style in Newmarket will have HD material playing. Of course, they only have Sony televisions so you can't compare with other brands.

693688 2008-07-31 01:58:00 comon, I've had people go from blurry K9's to 30+ flatscreens and still reckon the k9 had a better pic !
same thing with audio, had plenty with speakers hooked up wrong etc and the people don't notice.

from experience people have no idea what quality is until they are taught what to look for.

693689 2008-07-31 02:00:00 Yeah but Sony always look better, so it isn't a problem! :D

Seriously though, the only LCD TV that comes close to Sony is Samsung.
