693269 2008-07-29 08:07:00 The RepRap (reprap.org) has become a grandparent and is now capable of self-replication!

RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper, which some of you may have heard of before. Vik Olliver is a local NZ'er who was (or still is?) a contributor to the NZ PC World magazine. A great advocate of opensource (note Ubuntu running on the desktop :p), Vik is allowing his technology to be freely available to all and even gives instructions (reprap.org) on how to do this.

Pretty neat huh? :)

693271 2008-07-29 12:19:00 It's when they get to the point of replication WITH improvements AND time-travel that I'll start to get worried and reach for my armoury, while cursing Skynet... :) But maybe if they're as attractive as John Connor's terminator offsider (or even his mother), I could overlook some small faults (like world domination) :D :banana johcar (6283)

693273 2008-07-29 21:26:00 I am going out to play for a while. I may be quite some time.

(There could be some disbelieving Dragon sighs involved.)

It's a start - it's a good way to prove a concept...

Factory robots; cost: millions.
Reprap; cost: pocket change

And we have companies that do printing, as well as huge factories devoted to turning out CDs.
Why should we need a printer or CD burner on our PCs?

;)

The difference being the factory robots produce quality products (generally) with a warranty, while the rip rap produces useless crap.

Give me a buzz when it churns out a 50" LCD and i mite be impressed.
