819320 2009-10-11 09:27:00 Hi all, I asked this a couple of days ago but want to see if people are still having same problems as me.
I have been with xtra a few years now ever since the Go Large plan and have never had much trouble playing COD4 online to Aussie servers at all times of the day and night. I have not had much chance to play lately but this week had some spare time at night and wanted to play online but have been unable to due to latency times of 300 to 400 ms to any aussie server. However NZ servers were fine. Yet during the day aussie servers have been fine. I'm not sure at which time exactly the latency increases in the evening but I have tried after 8pm.
Anyway I had to make the switch to Big Time as telecom has forced eveyone who was on the Go Large and it's still the same problem. I realize they are traffic shaping but they were doing that on the Go large as well. I thought maybe it's the high number of people online during the school holidays but as school starts tomorrow I would expect the numbers to be considerably less tonight but alas still have unplayable pings to Australia.
Does anyone know whats going on?
Cheers

819321 2009-10-11 18:33:00 Its quite probably an issue with the local exchange, or further up the line.

Long story short, your best bet is to contact them, complain (Not to first level support), give them the port numbers that COD runs on, and hope that they're able to correct the issue.

Is it safe to assume that doesn't happen with NZ servers?

Always good gaming with Aussies at night, coz they're a few hours behind us so they're "up later in the night" :D

819322 2009-10-11 18:39:00 Yeah, same for me mate. I'm a heavy gamer - well was, and same plan as you.

My pings for CoD4, CoD5, Crysis Wars etc range from 280 - 670ms during night times. It's also happening during the day as well, because I've had holidays and have been trying to get a game in or two.

Personally I think they're doing it, because it wasn't this bad at all. I can't even play on New Zealand servers, let alone Australian. However, because of that. I'm downloading all the Gigs I can before I change over. 21,683.53 MB so far, since Oct 2nd. =D

But anyway... I don't think there is anything you can really do about it. They can just blame it on traffic management. I've tried before, a number of times. And it's not my internet because I can get pretty high speeds sometimes... yeah, just sometimes.

What time of the day or night?
www.telecom.co.nz
Can you try it before 9AM or after 2AM and see?

Ah! Common misconception that fast speeds = reliable. Definitely not.
Just because you can go to speedtest and get a high speed does *not* mean that your connection will be good for Gaming / VoIP etc.
pingtest.net helps a bit, but long story short there are a myriad of other issues that could affect your connection, regardless of your speed, which make gaming poor.

We play Warcraft III over a private VPN service I've setup, and we've got one dude on Dial-Up who plays. His connection is generally more reliable than the connection of one of our other mates who's on ADSL.
...Just FYI ;)
