818918 2009-10-10 03:46:00 Guy's I've been off the air since Friday morning when my Internet connection just collapsed. My ISP thinks it's a Telecom problem but I'm curious as to what the ppp light, or absence of it, is actually trying to tell me.

What's the ppp stand for and what is that function monitoring?

My ISP have set me up with Dial-Up (which is what I'm on at the moment) and boy what a shock it is going back. :crying

Maybe a resident genius can even help fix the problem? ;)

818919 2009-10-10 03:52:00 There's usually two lights:
PPP & ADSL

ADSL tells you that its enabled on the line and the cables plugged in
PPP is the actual "connection" side of things, such as username / password

818920 2009-10-10 05:56:00 Thanks Chill.

The DSL light is on full.

The ppp light flicks once at switch on and remains off.

My ISP think it's an exchange problem, but Telecom say they have reset the port and it isn't their problem.

ISP = Kinect Modem = RTA 1025w

Anything I should check? :thanks

818921 2009-10-10 06:55:00 How is it connected to the PC? USB or ethernet?

Check the username / password in it (www.geekzone.co.nz)

818922 2009-10-10 07:58:00 Check in the modem config to see if your username and password is still there.
It is possible for modems to drop your username and as a result it will never connect.

818923 2009-10-10 20:40:00 Thanks guy's, all fixed.

Wiring fault in exchange. Happened 8:30am Friday and although Kinect put through numerous "Tickets" it took Telecom until 9:00am Sunday to attend to the problem that they had obviously caused.

Must say Kinect were very good and even gave me an unlimited dial-up connection. What a shock going back to Dial-up. Took about five minutes for this site to load with all the adds. (I was using an old computer that had a dial-up modem and no add blocking software) :(

Anyway, thanks again to those that tried to help.

818924 2009-10-15 06:35:00 You wouldn’t believe it, but here I am back on Dial-Up and I’m not a happy camper.

After being off the air from 9am Friday to 9am Sunday because of what was described as a wiring fault in the exchange, today we crash again.

No PPP light and no DSL light either this time.

So again I go through the ritual of disconnecting everything plugging in two different Modems individually without filters into each jackpoint and once again no PPP light or DSL light on Dynalink Modem and no ADSL light on D-Link.

Ok, so my ISP are convinced the problem belongs to Telecom again so they ask for the Port to be rest.

Now if your wondering where this is going here it is.

They told me that after resetting the Port, (which is done by computer I understand) it takes 4 hours to take effect.

Surely not, 4 hrs, what the devil takes 4 hrs when your talking computers?

Anyway, I curious as to whether this is a fact and if there is anything else I should try. :thanks

Not everything gets pushed out instantly, sometimes you just have to wait for it to be pulled at the next update - SMS/SCCM is a good example of a common technology that can easily take this long to deploy stuff. It all depends on what the various polling intervals have been set to.

818927 2009-10-15 06:47:00 So when us poor suckers get our bleeping bills, is it alright for us to pay 4 months
later. when we can be bothered 'polling' our bill?
I think not! If these telcos want our money they should offer a decent service.
