693711 2008-10-15 08:26:00 Recently went through the same thing - my sony '29 inch' was starting to do funny things and I thought with the recession that the price of tvs might start going up pretty soon.

Was gob smacked when I measured my screen and found it was only 27 inch (they are measured diagonally) - and when widescreen is playing on the CRT it is only 25 inch!

Soo- I went out thinking that a 32 inch is a huge upgrade, and that I was a bit miffed with Sony for lying about the size.

Anyway, equipped with looking at quite a few blogs on HDTVs I started looking closely at the sony Bravia. Ended up buying a Bravia 32 with the built in HD tuner - this is the 1080p model.

Anyone who says there is no difference between HD and normal has clearly never seen true HD - every day I look at the tv and marvel at the clarity - bear in mind that not all of the broadcasts are HD.

My only regrets are - should have got a 42", and don't think the 1080p is essential - quite a few broadcasts are at 720p and these are still unbelievably clear - I guess with a 32 it doesn't really matter unless you sit with your nose on the screen.

End of the day I can watch true HD without needing any other devices plugged in and switched on. Next step is recording HD - really hurts to watch home movies (analog) and watching programmes recorded with our DVD recorder. Even though it upscales to 576p, the record rates are crap and the picture is so poor that we are better recording to the old VHS played back through composite!

Next project is building a HTPC with a spare computer to allow HD recording - anyone got tips?

The worst thing of all with an HDTV is that the Playstation 2 looks like absolute crap on the TV. So bad that I have had to plug it back into the CRT! I am boycotting the Playstation 3 on the basis that if they can't be bothered supporting the PS2 then I can't be bothered supporting them - too bad my TV is Sony! Worse still the only PS3's that do play PS2 are all second hand and selling for more than brand new units - that sucks.

Anyway sorry for the essay but I am a huge convert.

693712 2008-10-15 17:48:00 I'm also a non-techie on things like TV's. Had to replace ours a month ago. Went plasma, and SWMBO got the Sky HD Upgrade as well. I believe the ads on TV now - the one with the two ants talking - even I can see the vast improvement in clarity and the stunning visual pictures. SWMBO's eyes are starting to go square from all the TV watching.

Me - I've just watched a DVD of *what's her name again? Canadian female singer? B*gger, I forgot.*. Not to worry, it will come to me but the HD version was awesome, and I don't use that word often.

693715 2008-10-15 20:21:00 Do you all notice that wide screen tends to make some people fat due to film taken without none wide screen kit.
I assume that is cause?

Did you measure the 32" too?

Yep, they do look like crap . Friend has a 32" LCD and a 42" Plasma . Her PS2 looks even worse on the plasma .

But TVs aren't designed for gaming anyway, try your PC on it, bet its even worse . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
