Apart from anything else Maori has no scientific/technical words other than those recently made up to try to convey a meaning of sorts. It is suited to a society that did not have the wheel and no technology at all. I have seen ridiculous translations such as the waka that floats on the air and sings meaning the radio waves and the like. Maoris are welcome to learn it and speak it but don't impose it on others. |

Another thing that bugs me is their irresistible urge to keep changing the pronunciation of so many words. No consideration has been given to the fact that the old Linguists that wrote the language for them 200 odd years ago were pedantic sods that went to extreme lengths to spell a word how it was pronounced. Thus, if a word was spelt with a WH then that was because thats how it was spoken. Had it been pronounced with an F then it would have been written with an F. Our News Readers on TV are the limit, as they continuously try to impress political correctness with the most amazing derivations of old and existing place names. Only the other day I heard one on about Quitey. Where? After a while I worked out it was Te Kuiti. However, I was down the Bible Belt of South Auckland during Maori Language Week and I felt the need to enter into the spirit of things so I greeted everybody with Tena Kotou, Tena Kotou, Tena Kotou. To which the only response I got was: Foooooook off ya Koont! Really, their Maori is as bad as my English. :crying |

| 692484 | 2008-07-27 21:58:00 | And what are the Maori words for Sawn off shotgun Bank robbery Agravated Assault ? There must be maori words for all those terms as they were into all that sort of thing long before the British turned up . I do think that the name of this thread should be changed from "how much do you know" to "how much do you care . " As has been said by others in this thread, why not learn a useful language? Latin is much more of a dead language than maori will ever be but Latin has a much bigger advantage in teaching you the derivatives of much of the English language which is, by the way, the most widely spoken language in the world . Latin is also the international language of science, academia, and law . The Latin alphabet, together with its modern variants such as the English, Spanish and French alphabets, is the most widely used alphabet in the world . What is the maori language useful for? I've still to hear anyone that has a general use for it . :illogical That's not to say that you can't learn it if you want . Go ahead . Do what you want . I agree with Metla, B . M . and fnphoto . Shoving it down one's throat does not make it an attractive proposition . When I was at primary school in the 50s the maori language along with songs and action songs were just part of school . No-one said that you had to learn it - it just happened and most went along with it . These days one is told that you must! That attitude has never worked in the past and I doubt if it will work in the future . :illogical |

| 692485 | 2008-07-27 23:54:00 | When I lived in the UK where I did most of my schooling and qualifications, nobody tried to force me into learning Gaelic, (Scottish or Irish versions), Welsh, or the old language spoken in Cornwall etc. We did have Latin as a choice (marvelous old useless language - but beautiful). I still do not want to learn any of the above languages or Maori. I would prefer to update my French, German, Latin and I love the Spanish and Italian languages. Japanese would be useful, so would Chinese. Sounding off to one of my old Maori friends I told him I thought it would be much more relevant to teach all Maori Spanish - soon to be in greater world use than English apparently. He put his hand into his pocket and brought out the Spanish speaking certificate he had just picked up from the Polytechnic. Some years ago I met a translator having a holiday in NZ. I told her about our Technical Teachers Association having alternative titles etc in Maori. I though she would never stop laughing. "Don't they realise that English IS the language of technology?" she said. Maori should now take its place as a classic only. I have no desire to learn it but do not like to see it laughed at. |
