I also wonder how long will it be before everyone has to know the language in order to make a living. Quite right Sweep,we shouldn't be able to get a job unless we speak maori. |

| 692472 | 2008-07-27 03:24:00 | I know a few Maori words, but do not think it is worth learning as it is really only a ceremonial language. It has very few words in its vocabulary. And there are many thoughts and feelings you cannot express using Maori. Sure learn a basic words and sentences. But do not elevate it into something it is not with School C Maori ! etc etc. They are inventing new Maori words to compensate for this. It is best to learn English properly (as others have said) and more useful languages to our trade etc such as mandarin, Japanese etc. |

| 692474 | 2008-07-27 04:03:00 | Like many others I would prefer to learn useful languages over learning Maori. Learning Mandarin Japanese or German etc would be vastly more sensible over a language that is not spoken in any other country. English gets the job done nicely in NZ and is spoken by the vast majority of the population, trying to encourage 2nd languages is simply not 'logical'. |

I consider it a part of our history, not a current thing. As for words, I know: Kai (food) Puku (stomach) Hangi (as far as I care, good food!) Tahi (1) Rua (2) Toru (3) Fa (4) And I can't even remeber how to spell 3 and 4. |
