694935 2008-08-04 20:34:00 Hi Guys

As an inventor (low tech) I have been very interested in the Martin Jet Pack by that guy in the South Island.

I saw a couple of tv reports recently.

But the clips were not that impressive.

He said it should be able to fly a man 8,000 feet high and for about half an hour. That sounds great.

But every time time I see it, it only lifts a guy up two feet off the ground and they do not fly forward more than three feet.

OK there are two guys holding on to it. He says (eventually for safety). Also he said his son was not that experienced a test pilot durr (yet he has been working with his Dad on it for years !)

But my question is.

Do you think it can go much higher than two feet and can it move forward and be controlled, eg turn left or turn right and fly stabily ?

694936 2008-08-04 20:46:00 There's a video of a controlled flight, where it flys around 2-3ft off the ground, and does a variety of maneouvers unassisted. There's two people running alongside, but they aren't actually holding on to the device.

694938 2008-08-04 21:22:00 Looks like it's hovering on ground effect. With helicopters, only the more powerful ones can ascend vertically beyond ground effect (and seldom do because of the avoid curve).

Even if he manages to engineer beyond that point, I see little purpose to the machine because the point of any aircraft is payload. If all it can do is get just a pilot and nothing else into the air then it is no different from a microlight. There's plenty of them and they're cheap.

Because a ducted fan pack has an awesome ring to it doesn't it?

Practically rolls off the tongue.
