693991 2008-08-01 03:08:00 Does your boss require you to bring a doctor's certificate if you have been away from work for 3 days or more? my boss actually takes my word for it because i dont go to the doctor when im sick and nor does my boss so he understands :) markh (12164)

693993 2008-08-01 06:21:00 When I was working in general practice, I would always offer to bill the employing company for any medical certificate they required, rather than bill the patient.

I'd usually biff in a couple of extra days sick leave as well since I think making an employee pay for a doctor's visit required for the company's purposes, not the employees, stinks.

Take it up with your union, if you've got one.

693994 2008-08-02 07:55:00 Some places I have worked, there was a clause in the employment contract requiring one after 2 days. Myth (110)
693995 2008-08-02 08:08:00 I think you'll find that if an employer requires you to get a doctors certificate then they have to pay. Of course they wont tell you that and they may require you to see the company designated doctor if they think your family doctor might give out doctors notes a bit too freely. Plus they may present the doctor with a list of other duties available and ask the doctor if you are able to do any of them. Robinz (9362)
693996 2008-08-02 11:01:00 Try this one (from the Dubliners):

Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight
and at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight;
me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray
and I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today .

While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear;
now, to throw them down from such a height was not a good idea .
the foreman wasn't very pleased, he beeing an awkward sod
he said I'd have to cart them down the ladders in me hod .

Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow,
so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below .
But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see
that a barrelful of building bricks was heavier than me .

So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead
and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead .
Well, I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found
that halfway up I met the bloody barrel comming down .

Well, the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped,
and when I reached the top I banged the pully with my head .
Well, I clung on tight through numbed shock from this almighty blow
and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below .

Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more;
still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground,
and I landed on the brocken bricks that were all scattered round .

Well, I lay there groaning on the ground, I thougth I'd passed the worst,
when the barrel hit the pully-wheel and then the bottom burst .
Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope
as I lay there moaning on the ground, I let go of the bloody rope .

The barrel than being heavier, it started down once more,
and landed right across me, as I lay upon the floor .
Well, it broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say
that I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not a work today .

693997 2008-08-02 12:31:00 As an issuer of Medical Certs, it is very apparent that there is a huge difference in the working atmosphere's in different companies. Where the employees enjoy their work, there is a much greater reluctance to take a "sickie". It always strikes me that companies which want certs after a day or two away demonstrate very little trust in their employees. Frequently this seems to be reflected in the attitude of the sick employee! It is usually patently obvious from attendance patterns who is trying to swing the lead. No need to waste time and money getting a piece of rather worthless paper. DrMD (7778)

Never a truer word spoken/written! Now if everyone was self-employed.... there'd be no motivation whatsoever to take sickies ('cos you can't charge for time you didn't work). And if the place of work became unpleasant - you leave (and there isn't anything stopping a permanent employee do this either, other than fear of getting out of a rut).

693999 2008-08-02 23:03:00 Years ago when I was a teacher the kids often complained because they had to have a note from home if they were off sick - I generally shut them up by pointing out that as a teacher I couldn't get a note from home - I had to have a doctors note. And pay for it. They realized they had it better than I did.

And a great many more years ago than that, when working at English Electric Aviation I was asked to produce a sick note for the day I had taken off. I pointed out that I could do better and produced my Hospital card for an in growing toe nail operation. But I couldn't understand why they had picked on me. My attendance record was more or less perfect but others in the office had days off all over the show and were never checked on. The answer amazed me. Yes they knew my record was perfect which was why the only day I had taken of in about 10years stood out like a sore thumb and they wanted an explanation!
