820809 2009-10-15 04:53:00 Hey I have a 160Gb Seagate Barracuda Sata2. Been having some problems with it, had four different OS installs done on it, have had all of them lose the same system hive file. Is there something wrong with the hard drive? If there is is there any way to fix the problem? nedkelly (9059)
820810 2009-10-15 04:58:00 What do you mean "lose the same system hive file"? Could you please be more specific?

Run a SMART test on it, if you think it has a hardware problem.

Or it could be malware, or a hardware issue

820812 2009-10-15 05:06:00 Its probably getting confused with the different OS's on it Speedy Gonzales (78)
820813 2009-10-15 05:13:00 Could also be a RAM problem.
Run the Seagate Seatools on it and if that finds nothing try Memtest.

820814 2009-10-15 06:57:00 Cato: The file I lose is the system hive file.
Blam6: Dont think it could be a malware issue could it? 4 different installs?
Speedy: The 4 installs were 2 windows xp pro sp3 installs, vista basic and server 2003. Also I do a format every time I reinstall.
CYaBro: Would the ram really cause a problem with the system hive file?

820815 2009-10-15 08:09:00 Check the disc first & if it checks out I'd wipe the disc. 1 pass should be enough & then do a clean install. I use Shred for wiping. It's on Ubuntu live disc + others no doubt. It'll take all night to wipe. Check to see if the file is there, if so take an image of the disc & start installing your software. You'll find the offending program that way Phil B (648)

There are more than one hive files.

So what operating sytem(s) are you trying to run right now?

If using WinXP you might try this to repair the problem.
