694945 2008-08-05 04:26:00 Why do I get the feeling that this guy is a "Tall Poppy"? PJ

No sorry. It would have been nice but its lame. 27 years to get to a point where 2 people hold his machine?
Theres loads of others, that actually fly for 1/2 hour without someone hanging on to it.

694949 2008-08-05 07:16:00 I can see the military application for the things.

I mean, if the other side had them, there would be guys hovering in the air for my side to shoot at.

The US military was developing them 30-40 years ago, but abandoned the project (despite having some semi-working prototypes) due to safety concerns; if something goes wrong, you fall to the ground and die!

If you flew at 6ft you shouldn't die?

694954 2008-08-05 12:33:00 Yeah it was the LA Games. I think that thing used steam jets if I recall correctly.

[edit]From Wikipedia - Bell Rocket Pack "This rocket belt's propulsion works with superheated water vapour. A gas cylinder contains nitrogen gas, and two cylinders containing highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide. The nitrogen presses the hydrogen peroxide onto a catalyst, which decomposes the hydrogen peroxide into a mixture of superheated steam and oxygen with a temperature of about 740 °C. This was led by two insulated curved tubes to two nozzles where it blasted out, supplying the recoil. The pilot can vector the thrust by altering the direction of the nozzles through hand-operated controls. To protect from resulting burns the pilot had to wear insulating clothes."
