695233 2008-08-06 03:18:00 In our new flat we needed an extension cable (which we had) to connect the cable coming from the dish to the decoder. The pin(?) on the cable coming from the dish was badly damaged thus sometimes no signal coming through.

So I was playing with my knife to try to fix the connection of the two cables and given that I know nothing about handy work I ended up with bits and pieces which I didn't know how to put together anymore.

Anyway, sometimes I noticed sparks when I tried several connection possibilities to see how it works and my wife immediately told me to stop and ring a technician as she doesn't want to be a widow and this can't be good for the decoder blah, blah, blah....

Of course this noob with added testosterone said that its safe and she shouldn't worry. Am I the idiot who shouldn't try to fix stuff like this or is she right in being worried?

P.S. It still doesn't work because the copper wire in the middle is too long for all the connections to fit (looks like it needs that silver mesh of the black cable needs to touch the metal connections as well) and I don't have pliers at home. This shows the whole extent of my electrical knowledge

695234 2008-08-06 03:30:00 She's right but it isn't that dangerous that she will end up a widow. Unless she does you in for ruining Sky reception. She'll get off on the "DIY defence". PaulD (232)
695235 2008-08-06 03:31:00 I would seriously doubt there would be sufficient current to do you any damage in the cable from the decoder to the dish. But I guess you could do some damage to the decoder if wires that are designed to be separate touch each other... johcar (6283)
695236 2008-08-06 03:32:00 Wellllll :D the cable connectors are not that hard to put together - as long as you have the right tools.

If the end has been damaged, then it may pay to get someone in, it should only take a minute to cut the cable, and crimp on a new connector.
Once they have been crimped they are not meant to be altered, you usually cut the old one off and replace it if needed.

Nope. It's every male's right, obligation even, to dick around with stuff and try to fix it.

If it works, you're a hero. If it doesn't then it was never fixable.

695239 2008-08-06 04:01:00 Thanks for the replies . I think I might just give it another crack to repair tonight . Surely watching my builders crack is far more pretty than her Food TV programmes .

After extensive google seach I even found out what the problem is and this website on "How to crimp a coax cable" will teach me how to do it .

Tonight my wife will hear my lion's roar from the lounge whilst she is preparing my meat in the kitchen . New age man is about to become Mr Fix-It :punk

Whats wrong with her? Doesn't she know real men are supposed to fix things?
Would she prefer you poncing around in a pink shirt trying on mens moisturisor or something?
