2008-08-05 09:19:00 Hi there
Can anyone explain to me why we get a normal (in fact, brilliant) picture on our 32" LCD when viewing in digital Freeview format via UHF aerial, yet the pic we receive through the Telstra cable is no better than our old CRT TV, and all the programme content looks like it's been squashed downwards. The women in particular look as though they have big bottoms and everyone is shorter and wider than they probably are in real life. I flicked between freeview and cable when the news was on and the presenter looked heaps "squatter" through cable compared to freeview. I've tried changing the screen format but nothing seems to make a difference, except for the viewable width of the picture. Also, on-screen text half-disappears. It's definitely not giving us a proper wide-screen view. Any help appreciated, ta.

2008-08-05 09:26:00 are you using the old telstra cable box, or the newer digital one? plod (107)
2008-08-05 09:27:00 I posted this on the chat forum, but this is probably where I ought to have put it - sorry. Here's the problem:

2008-08-05 09:39:00 We've just upgraded to digital. That's why I am surprised that the picture through cable is no better than before. I'm really disappointed... k8smum (6062)
2008-08-05 09:45:00 I'd say that the output from your telstra 'box' (does telstra tv have a 'box'?) is 4:3 and your TV is set to 16:9. Unless you can change the output settings on your telstra box I think you're stuck with what you've got. If you change your TV to 4:3 then the picture should come right, but it will cut off the edges meaning thick black lines either side of the pic. pine-o-cleen (2955)

You say you have changed the screen format. Have you done this on the cable box or just the tv?

2008-08-05 09:55:00 OMG! I've just been fiddling around with the digital box remote (before I spotted your latest response) and found a button labelled "options". That provides the opportunity to change screen formats. I have set it on 16:9 full screen which seems okay, or at least better than it was. Is that what it should be on? I wouldn't have a clue (in more ways than one, you're probably saying). k8smum (6062)
2008-08-05 10:01:00 It is a digital decoder. A kind person suggested on the other forum that I try using the decoder remote to set the screen format. In fact, prior to reading that response I had been fiddling about with the remote and found the "option" button which allows the selection of a number of screen formats, including 16:9 full screen. Much better result, although the picture itself is still nowhere near as clear as freeview. Thanks all. k8smum (6062)
2008-08-05 10:35:00 I think I have mine set 16.9 for screen and the option under that letterbox, I think plod (107)
2008-08-05 11:03:00 I posted this on the chat forum, but this is probably where I ought to have put it - sorry. TVs are not computers, so I've moved your duplicate thread from PressF1 and merged it into this thread. :) Jen (38)
