"The C-17 was designed around the cargo load. It can convert to airline or cargo seats. It can handle a combination of passengers, vehicles, track vehicles, cargo, medical evacuations, hummers, fire trucks, helicopters, an Abrams tank -- up to 80,000 metric tons," he said. (aero-news.net)

696515 2008-08-11 12:07:00 True, but the C-17 would be handy for commuting out to the wingtips of the Antonov (www.raf.mod.uk). R2x1 (4628)

They fly over here periodicly at about 30,000 + Ft via Christchurch on there way to Antarctica. They are not as big as the C5 Galaxy they repaced.

696517 2008-08-11 21:43:00 Maybe not - but will a C5 lift "80,000 metric tons"? ;)
Isn't the C-17 intended to supplement, not replace the C-5?

696518 2008-08-11 23:44:00 up to 80,000 metric tons

If you pause and think, that is a major mis-quote or misprint.

Its official capacity is quoted at 160,000 pounds but depending on what source you use, it can carry 70 to 75 metric tonnes.

Never suspend credibility just because the figures look amazing. It would take a fleet of 1000+ C-17s to carry 80,000 metric tonnes.
