A sad day, a very sad day in New Zealand's medical history. Up there with the continued unregulated drugs area.

696370 2008-08-11 02:00:00 Mind you, looks like this story now has a better chance to escalate & actually generate interest from the general public &/or the authorities who should be policing these self-proclaimed "doctors".

Go the NZMJ!

I wouldn't even give them that high status.

Chiros can be useful for certain back problems. Our backs do get out of alignment sometimes and a good manipulation can make it better - that is my personal experience. But chiros get into the fringe stuff akin to homeopath whackos, making all sorts of outrageous claims. They can make huge amounts of $$$ if they run their business right; we had a Swiss chiro in our town who spent only 10 minutes per person and charged around $40. He was booked solid, every week, making at least $150 an hour. Its a very profitable con.

The article Geekster highlights is good. Bad Science indeed. This is the part I like, because it makes reference to Good Science, the scientific method:

While chiropractors struggle to manifest to their customers an air of academic rigour, their actions in this letter demonstrate more than anything else how little they understand the simple day to day business of academic journals, journal clubs, work in progress seminars and indeed the entirety of medicine: we take the piss out of each others ideas. We criticise them. We tear them apart, mercilessly. When we criticise survival stats, or the interpretation and analysis of data, make no mistake: we are accusing each other of killing patients unnecessarily. This is the bread and butter of academia and medicine. Only very occasionally does anyone take personal offense.

If any PF1ers can show us scientific proof that chiropracty or homeopathy actually works (for the wide range of ailments they claim to cure), I'd like to see it.

696373 2008-08-11 23:28:00 The scientific method has it's own very serious limitations though. And the biomedical model is extremely mechanistic - bodies are not machines - no matter how intricate and responsive to that mode of description.

But I did like the article - and the chiropractors are arses for trying to silence criticism.

If I remember correctly (another big if), a mass trial that tested homeopathy on either heart disease or smoking, was pulled off because alot more people on the homeopathy treatments kept dying.

696377 2008-08-12 03:24:00 A friend of mines son died not that long ago of an aggressive form of bone cancer .

He was just 21 .

However, there was an endless queue of quacks offering their very expensive services and feasting on his illness . They all had a cure . A drowning man will clutch at a straw and these scumbags know it .

One even attended his funeral and asked the mother for $20 for a taxi home!

If anybody is arranging a lynch party to deal with these scumbags I’m available .
