820974 2009-10-16 08:25:00 hahaha this is what acer support has told me to do

You will need to set your unit back to factory default by using the recovery partition.
As this procedure will determine whether the issue is hardware or software related.
Below are the instructions:

1 *****Ensure all Data is backed up, all data will be deleted.*****
2 Please also ensure that all USB storage devices are removed before starting the recovery process
3 Restart machine
4 When your unit switches back on, wait for the ACER screen then hold down alt & tap f10 repeatedly..
5 Please wait a moment until prompted, -How would you like to restore?-
6 Please select –Restore system to factory default-
7 Enter your defined password or enter six zeros ‘000000’
8 Click ok
9 Please wait until process completed, this will take 45min – 1hour

If problems persist we do provide non-warranty service so please reply back at your convenience.

only thing is that holding alt and repeatedly pushing f10 does nothing. and as soon as you stop pushing the combo it just loads up windows. no menu or anything

820975 2009-10-16 08:49:00 When you wiped the drive - did you actually wipe the recovery partition as well ??

As per my previous post --
When you open W7 - look under "Computer" where the drives are, does it show another smaller drive / partition.
IF you did, you will need a vista DVD to reinstall it, OR pay out some $$ to Acer to get recovery DVDs.

Have you tried both Alt keys ?

820976 2009-10-16 08:51:00 it doesnt show it under computer. but there is a hidden partition on my harddrive of 10GB. thats what the recovery is on and i decided when i installed win7 to not touch it. my c and d partitions i did merge but left the other one. just thinking maybe there is a different combination maybe that i needa press caviliar (15021)
820977 2009-10-16 10:17:00 You have not mentioned the model of Acer you have, you need to get into the Acer erecovery console - so go to This Acer site (support.acer-euro.com) - locate the eRecovery link for your model ( they may all be the same - not to sure) - run the exe file in the zipped folder, It will hopefully install the erecovery module and allow the recovery image to run - or at least create the bootable CD (thats from memory) the last time I did it on a customers Acer laptop, but that was many months ago.

My own Acer is way to old to use these so I cant test it.

When you got the laptop, you also should have gotten a recovery cd, that boots the recovery app into life or the erecovery may allow you to make a bootable cd to do this.

BTW - as far as I know alt + F10 should boot the restore mode.

Edited: by any chance its the same laptop as This thread (pressf1.co.nz) - if so what happened ??

Edited2: there is a slight chance that by merging / altering the partitions, you may have also stuffed up the recovery options

Edited3 Latest erecovery for the 5520 (www.acer.co.nz) Select Notebook/Aspire/model/ Application/ Erecovery

820978 2009-10-16 10:49:00 haha nah that was my girlfriends laptop. i used erocovery for it and made bootable disk. however those disks seem to be for the machine thy're made for.

i'v just gotten hold of an iso of vista, not sure what version but any should prob do it

i'll give it a try anyway with loading on vista in a clean install. then if usb works will do a custom install of win7

i now know what i've got planned for the next several hours haha

820979 2009-10-16 11:57:00 ooooooooh i just did a clean install. i dont know to much about drivers and what not but is 'PCI flash memory' important for using usb stuff. coz if so im guessing that is the problem. and if it is i just need to kow where to download that driver caviliar (15021)
820980 2009-10-16 12:01:00 Looks like that PCI flash memory entry belongs to the card reader. Thats probably what that invalid entry was last time Speedy Gonzales (78)

im not 100% sure wat u r saying but i sorta get you. where exactly do i go looking for 'PCI flash memory driver' ?? thats all i want now haha

820982 2009-10-16 12:17:00 Probably the ENE card reader drivers here ("ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/) which are for vista. Click on aspire_5100 / vista. If you cant figure it out the direct link is here (ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5100/vista/Drivers/ENE%20Card%20Reader%20Driver%203.00.00.zip)

You may have to figure out WHAT chipset the wireless uses. Since there's 2 on that site. Before you install the drivers for the wireless. You'll also have to figure out what chipset the cam uses, since there's 4 of them as well. WHAT version of Win7 have you got?? 32 or 64 bit??
Speedy Gonzales (78)
820983 2009-10-16 12:25:00 version is windows 7 professional 32bit .

im at ftp://ftp . work . acer-euro . com/notebook/aspire_5100/driver but cant see the ENE card reader you mentioned . the wireless and all that is working perfectly atm so wont worry about those drivers for the meantime
