820956 2009-10-16 02:06:00 The port itself is stuffed / knackered then. If nothing is plugged into any of them. Is USB enabled in the BIOS if all USB ports are dead? Speedy Gonzales (78)

real... ok then that sucks. so all usb ports can just decide to fail at the same time. so just a coincidence that it was several hours after i installed windows 7. suckkkkkkkkky!

haha. ok so what are the options? how do i replace usb ports?

thats a real good point. i look in the bios though and cant see anything that looks like usb. is there a special name for it? to see if its enabled?

820959 2009-10-16 02:15:00 o i should point out then that when i plug a device in it comes up bottom left saying that its not recognised, does that mean the usb is turned on but just not working.... sorta added onto last post caviliar (15021)

The port is not stuffed, the windows 7 registry is corrupted for the device....do you have a live linux distro, you could prove its still working by booting up to the live cd instead and testing....

There SHOULD be an entry, or it wouldnt have USB ports. Look under all the menus, it maybe called USB configuration. It may say something like USB controller which should be enabled, and controller mode, enabled, and if theres a entry/option for hi speed make sure its on hispeed. On one site a guy had to go into the registry and had to right mouse on the entry then permissions, then change it to full control

820962 2009-10-16 03:16:00 oooooh i think i just found out the problem!! so tried connecting my external harddrive. as it said installing device the comp froze. so i decided to restart and uninstall all the usb controllers and then restart. the usb2.0 slot hasnt reshown up but there says theres no yellow exclamation marks. kinda scared to try pluging a device into one of the other slots to see if its now working haha caviliar (15021)
