821467 2009-10-17 23:35:00 Its happened a few times again after running for about 10 mins, looks like i'm gonna be doing some spring cleaning inside the laptop. If you do, *don't* use the vacuum on the inside of the laptop; static buildup on the pipe can fry things. Go buy a can of compressed air and use that, unless you have access to a compressor. Erayd (23)

I'm a complete mark when it comes to PC's and laptops, do you gus think it wise for me to open the laptop up or should i take it to somebody who's a bit more qualified. If i do decide to do it myself are there any do's and dont's?

Thanks again guys.

821470 2009-10-19 18:32:00 Hi guys

Just thought i'd update you on my laptop (and possibly recieve a bit more help from the wizards here:help:)

I know i should have taken the laptop to a qualified tech to get fixed but since i was going to throw it away i thought what the heck, lets just open it. So, i did a lot of research and opened it up. To my surprise there was not a lot of dust inside so i removed the heat sink and had a look at the cpu without removing it. The metal middle of the CPU didn't have much thermal paste left on it and most of it seemed like it had leaked onto the green part of the processor and was covered in it. Now since thermal paste conducts heat and most of it was on the processor could this be why it was overheating?

Any ideas how i should remove the paste off the green processor and reapply it?

Thanks in advance.

821471 2009-10-19 20:05:00 Clean it off with a cloth and some alcohol/CPU thermal grease cleaner.

Then reapply with some thermal paste. You can get it at any decent PC store.

821472 2009-10-19 20:35:00 Thanks alot blam,

Do you think it was due to the paste being on the green part of the processor which was causing the overheating?
