For example, if you wanted to ditch iTunes all together, you could start with "self-sustaining iPod" as your search, and start from there. If this sparks your interest, you will soon find almost limitless uses for your iPod. Good luck and have fun

I use it for almost all of my music. I've got all of my music in Apple Lossless running into my stereo and couldn't be much happier.

820868 2009-11-17 21:28:00 On my Ipod touch 2nd Gen I can used I-Funbox to drag MP3's straight to the device, never had a problem (Iphones also ok)

I am fuzzy on other Ipods, i believe later Generation of nano's etc can play Mp3 dumped to the device fine, hence you are getting different opinions.

820869 2009-11-17 23:23:00 Silly looking question at first glance, but a lot of people haven't been able to give me an answer to this; using a third party app to transfer files (to hell with itunes, I should be able to drag and drop), does the ipod still do any weird encoding of mp3s?

AFAIK YES....had a friend with wma files, but wanted to use them with iTunes, we converted all the mp3 so iTunes wouldnt double the files!
