822301 2009-10-20 09:13:00 It used to be that a large hard drive needed to be partitioned into smaller drives in order to realize the most space possible on said hard drive.

Is that still relevant to drives now?

I have a partitioned 500gb and I would rather it were one 500gb drive, would I lose space doing that?

No. You'll only see about 465GB rather than 500GB though. (Due to how PCs and humans see HDs differently, google it if you want to find out more)

822303 2009-10-20 09:28:00 i think by creating more patitions you lose space. by keeping it as a single partition you have the maximum space that is allowable like Blam said. ronyville (10611)

Where'd you get that from? AFAIK No matter what you do the the HD, it won't lose space. There might a little bit of space used up for FS data but thats it.

822305 2009-10-20 09:42:00 was just looking at the 2 500GB drives i have. 1 without partition gives me 465GB of space to use. the 2nd drive is partitioned in 3. 48.8 + 289+ 97.6 = 435.4GB of space to use. so by partitioning i lost 465 - 435.4 = 26.6GB of space. mmmmmmmmm dont know if that seems right... ronyville (10611)
822306 2009-10-20 09:43:00 Thanks guys that pretty much answers my question. DeSade (984)

ooooooops .. sorry Blam. you are right. i kinda got confused as i didnt see the 26GB partition that as Linux Mint on it ;) hence i thought i lost that 26GB. my bad.
