822066 2009-10-19 19:36:00 Hello, I am trying to figure out how to transfer an internal HD into another computer. My computer mobo (I think) went dead on me. So I am trying to figure out how to get the data out of the computer and was wondering how I would go about doing something like this. If anyone could give me some tips that would be wonderful:help:

I don't know if this helps but some info:
its a desktop to desktop transfer
old desktop runs on windows xp
new one runs on windows vista 64bit

822067 2009-10-19 19:42:00 Remove the hard drive (from the dead mobo), and connect it to the working computer. (If its IDE, make sure its jumpered properly first). WHAT do you want to copy?? Dont worry about programs that have been installed already. They wont work. You'll have to reinstall them Speedy Gonzales (78)
822068 2009-10-19 19:42:00 You just need to plug the drive in and set the jumpers up appropriately. However if your old drive is IDE you might have some trouble as some new PCs only have SATA ports on the mobo, although there should be one IDE channel.

You will also probably need to take ownership (www.vistax64.com) of the user folder once it's all up and running.

If you're unsure how to do the hardware part of it, it would be better getting a tech or someone who knows how to do it safely. You don't want to risk damaging the hardware if you're not 100% sure on what needs to be done.

Paying a tech $20 or $30 is much nicer that killing your old hdd or new mobo. ;)

Mainly media files, mp3, avi, mpg

That should be fine then. Then only files you can copy / transfer are video files, and install files. And documents (like word docs etc), that are on it

also was wondering if I can use the old Hdd in the new comp and how would I set it up in there...well if its compatible/possible

If the new mobo supports IDE and SATA (If the old one is IDE). Sure can. Just connect the old hdd to whatever connection. Altho, if its IDE, and the PC with Vista on it, only has one IDE connector (If its got a CD or DVD on it). Some people say its not a good idea connecting an IDE hdd and cd / dvd on the same IDE connection.

Once its set up (and you've copied whatever). Go to computer then right mouse on the old hdd, then format. Or go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management. Highlight the old hdd / right mouse / format. Whats the brand / model of the Vista PC?? Is it something like a Dell / HP?? Or did you build / put it together yourself??

822072 2009-10-19 20:25:00 You could always use a USB>IDE/SATA adapter.

Around $25
