700800 2008-08-27 04:40:00 I noticed there seems to be almost no non-widescreen LCDs with a resolution higher than 1280x1024 still available in New Zealand. I really dislike widescreen monitors and the thought of being stuck with no other option is an unappealing one  .
Are 4:3 LCD monitors really going to go out of production?

700801 2008-08-27 04:45:00 Dell still seem to sell them (20", 1600x1200 res) www1.ap.dell.com

I suspect that 4:3 will still be available (like CRT monitors), but the pricing will be so unfavourable that you will be reluctant to choose them over the widescreen models.

700802 2008-08-27 05:52:00 Buy a widescreen and then swap it for my 19" LCD. :D pcuser42 (130)
700803 2008-08-27 05:57:00 World trends are/have changed to wide screen, so the manufactures are going to produce whats wanted.

Viewsonic still produce and have available 17 & 19" LCD 4:3.

700804 2008-08-27 06:23:00 whats wrong with wide screen monitors? you can 2 windows side by side without having to make them too narrow...

I used to prefer 4:3, but after using a wide screen aspect one, it seems slightly better...

they are also obviously better for movies as well.

700805 2008-08-27 07:09:00 What are they like for playing older games? The ones that only support lower resolutions. Do they have black bars either side? the_bogan (9949)
700806 2008-08-27 07:33:00 Widescreen monitors have a perceived market for gamers and movie watchers I suppose. Since the majority of the documents I read are in portrait format, I find widescreen would only be useful for yawning on. One hopes that proper monitors will always be available ;) R2x1 (4628)
700807 2008-08-27 08:28:00 I wasn't meaning to say that there are no 4:3 LCDs still available, just there aren't very many. What is available seems to be old models, old stock. The Dell linked to above is overpriced and only 16ms.

Buy a widescreen and then swap it for my 19" LCD.
The '19"' LCDs are either widescreen or 1280x1024; 5:4; the same resolution as 17" LCDs.

whats wrong with wide screen monitors? you can 2 windows side by side without having to make them too narrow...I find moving my eyes horizontally that distance unpleasant. The vertical resolution is poor too.

I think the real reason why they are favouring widescreen monitors is because they can say a monitor is N number of inches from a lower total pixel count than they can from a squarer monitor

700808 2008-08-27 19:32:00 I have had a 22 inch screen for 2 years and love it.

I use it for word processing, spreadsheets and email etc. It makes things much easier. I did buy it with the idea of being able to have 2 windows on screen at once, but found this was too much of a hassle to set up each time and re-size etc etc. (unless i missed something)

An L shaped screen would be great !

They would be great for word processing (a full A4 page on screen) and good for spreadsheets and movies.

I will add that to the many things I have invented.

I would think (haven't tried it) that a widescreen rotated to portrait would be the bees knees for what you do.
