823105 2009-10-22 10:32:00 Hello everyone,

I started using telecom broadband 4 months ago on the 3GB plan, however, within a week, I had exceeded my usage.

I changed to the 10GB plan and thought everything would be sweet, but, to my horror, within a week, I had exceeded my usage.

I have rung telecom every month to try and resolve this issue, but, the problem continues.

I do not have a wireless modem.

I am the only person that uses this computer.

I do not have P2P file-sharing software.

I do not use online gaming or watch streaming events.

I do not download any music or movies.

etc, etc, etc

I regularly run my anti virus and anti malware scans, but, nothing suspicious is detected.

I even went to the extent of wiping my hard drive clean and reloading everything with the recovery disks that were made when I first purchased this computer.

Its very strange, as soon as I have exceeded my broadband usage, my daily usage will drop back to within normal parameters.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

823110 2009-10-22 19:06:00 The usage meter is having issues this month, I was up to about 30gb then I got a over the limit email. I had another 10gb left.

Its a stated issue on their site right now, its usually fine.

823111 2009-10-22 19:07:00 How much usage are we talking? Whats your typical usage of the PC like (gaming? movies? email? etc)?

The OP said no gaming, or movies in the 1st post. If its email, it would have to be essays, or life histories before it fills 3 or 10 GB

823112 2009-10-22 19:16:00 I would install something better than Symantec antibot. Knowing them its probably updating every day. And I would use something better than AVG.

Those 2 alone would probably waste your GB's.

You can tick these entries, then tick fix checked.

823113 2009-10-22 21:39:00 You would probably have to assume that something on your PC is accessing the internet to use that much data allowance, so how about doing the following:

Turn your modem off for 24 hours and see what data telecoms usage meter shows as used while its off . There should be no data used at all (of course) .

Then perhaps try leaving the modem on then disconnect your PC from the modem for 24 hours . Likewise there should be no data used .

Assuming both tests above show no data used then its definitely your PC thats chewing up the data .

Norton/Symantec is horrible - It looks like you have both AVG and Norton? Get rid of both and install avira antivir (free version is good) .
Perhaps also try the utils on
. windowsecurity . com/securitytests/" target="_blank">www . windowsecurity . com - there is a trojan scan link that is quite good .

Also, if your PC is sitting there doing 'nothing' are the lights on your router going nuts? If so something is going on . Dont forget, the data used could (in a worst case) be someone/something trying to hack in - I believe (attempted) intrusions would/could count in your traffic .
robjg63 (13548)
823114 2009-10-22 21:42:00 You are right Rob - I had this issue years ago with Telecom - they charge for all incoming traffic as well of course so anyone going hard out trying to get in is counted towrds your traffic.
So while in the perfect world turning off your router *should* reveal no traffic - there will always be some.
I've noticed this as well on TC cable network, we can go away for a month and still get some traffic showing on the meter...
