2009-10-21 19:57:00 Morning all... What the maximum length we can send data over a serila cable? I need to remotely control a machine over serial cable, are they good for 10m, 50m..... Your thoughts please. 4Lowie (10869)
2009-10-21 20:01:00 A few sites say 50m. How far are these PC's from each other? Speedy Gonzales (78)

2009-10-21 21:04:00 Now then, as we are only using ground, data tx and data rx can we use somthing like cat 5 cable Or do we need to use fully shielded serial cable?? 4Lowie (10869)

2009-10-21 21:22:00 Traditionally RS-232C has been good for 50 feet, but no doubt it will work further at some loss of reliability. It's a voltage based signal and not balanced so a 3-cond shielded cable is the normal choice. Plus the GND is likely earthed at both ends.

However I would not be surprised if a CAT5 would work if the pairs are connected as such: TX and GND, RX and GND.
