822612 2009-10-21 01:35:00 Your advice would be welcome on my install of Win 7 .

Currently, I have a now disused partition (D:) that had Vista on it . This has a bootmgr that is still being used .

My current W7 RC is on C: . I would like to place my new install on the old Vista partition but am concerned that windows won't let me format it and the bootmgr file is a potential problem .

So, I just want the new W7 on the currently labelled D: drive but then to change to C: . (It seems as if W7 sorts out the drive letter as it did for my dual boot (C: became D: and W7 partition became C:)) .

If I just point the W7 at the D: drive will the bootmgr get sorted? (no dual boot) . Any fish hooks?

TIA .

822613 2009-10-21 02:37:00 If you get rid of yoru vista partition, you'll need to run the W7 boot cd and tell it to repair the windows install, that should have it sorted.

All being said and done, the RC will only work till 1st of June. And as far as I am aware, you will not be able to upgrade to W7 later, so you will have to do a clean install. Do you really want to do that?

822614 2009-10-21 02:43:00 Had a similar event, ended up formatting the unused drive ( had W7 RC) from within Admintools/ Computer management/ Disk management in Vista - this way I wouldn't install the New OS on the wrong drive and wipe out a good OS. ( this is dual booting Vista & W7) W7's boot loader should recreate the dual boot - but why have two OS's and only be able to boot into one ???

Installed W7 - booted up fine, now have the option to boot into Vista or W7 on startup, but set W7 as default OS. When you boot into W7 - it will be Drive C. And Vista will be drive D: - boot into Vista and its C, W7 = D. Currently on W7 Drive C (www.imagef1.net.nz) - if you notice there is bugger all on either drive, and they are only 250GB drives, this is because most of my files that I use are spread over 3 servers, with links to them, this way theres no worry about what OS I boot into the location of the files remain the same.

822615 2009-10-21 06:36:00 My Vista is gone for all money and has been transferred to another PC .

Tomorrow I replace my W7 RC with the final release one (provided the courier drops it off as expected) . I just want a single OS system as has been my normal practice .

Windows probably gags at formatting the D: drive because it has an active bootmgr file? Oh well, I will just point the new W7 at it and see how we go!

Why do you use Gparted then? I'm pretty sure its stopping you from formatting because of system files on the partition.

822617 2009-10-22 07:22:00 I'm sure you are right, blam. I could format with my Boot It but I won't tempt providence as that will zap the bootmgr with predictable results!

Bloody Computer Lounge only shipped me one instead of two so I find out tomorrow!

Yes, you can use the Windows Upgrade Disc to perform a clean/custom install, like in Vista.

linw: Lets hope it all goes as planned....:p

822620 2009-10-22 19:57:00 Thanks, blam. I am typing this on the new install done an hour ago! Booted from the disk and it was already pointing to the partition I wanted so away it went. It does have bootmanager as it saw the other RC install. Do I edit with a BCD editor to remove the second boot?

I must say moving the FF and TB profiles to a data area and simply pointing the progs to them is hugely beneficial. Works perfectly. Easy for backup, too.

Back to adding more progs!

You should be able to do it with EasyBCD or using bcdedit(or msconfig)
